Occhiuto made a mistake by naming De Salazar

Disastrous management of the Cosenza hub hospital: an appeal to President Occhiuto

Press release

The character is characteristic: he has a name evocative of the pirates of the Caribbean, a despotic and moody character and it is not clear what managerial skills he has, if it is true, as it is true, that he is surrounded by a substantial plethora of consultants, approximately Trentino, in turn unable to come up with anything good in the healthcare, administrative and technological fields.

I’m sorry to say it, but Occhiuto made a big mistake by appointing De Salazar at the top of the Cosenza Hospital Company, evidently ill-advised, and I repeat it today, the day in which the selections for the appointment of the general director resume, to try to avoid that repeat the mistake.

What I write is proven and corroborated by all the anomalies and dysfunctions of the Annunziata which clearly demonstrate the inadequacy of this commissioner management. I have repeatedly highlighted to President Occhiuto that his innumerable efforts and his decision-making are not enough to straighten out the Calabrian healthcare system if he keeps in the chain of command those who are clearly, knowingly or out of ineptitude against it.

And this applies at every level.

In the largest hub hospital in Calabria the situation is now dramatic and paradoxical (the worst hospital in Italy…..).

We complain about the shortage of doctors in Italy, yet at Annunziata we continue to do everything we can to see them through the door. Doctors are leaving due to the irrational and terrible management and organization of the hospital, the operating rooms and the healthcare personnel.

Doctors are hardly given space and equipment, beds and nursing staff, they can only use the operating rooms for one day a week and their professionalism and autonomy in managing the department are continually undermined by those who, among other things, do not he has skills, manners, nor even a prospective vision of the hospital.

The emergency room, then, is reduced to a hospital. Nothing but improvements!

Ask anyone who’s been there recently! Patients crowded together for days in a limbo of promiscuity and inefficiency waiting for a bed to become available, praying not to find only Cuban doctors on duty with whom, unfortunately, even a simple admission or discharge procedure becomes long and complicated.

The inauguration of the new emergency room, the result of the work of previous managements, will be of little use, given that there are no healthcare personnel who will be able to make it work.

And although the waiting lists are getting longer, in our latitudes some hospital doctors continue to be allowed to carry out visits exclusively under the “private” regime of intramoenia or even extramoenia, for a fee of 250 euros per visit.

No one has raised the issue that the conditions for authorizing the private activity of hospital doctors no longer exist and that perhaps it would be better to spend more hours of service in the emergency room and in the wards.

It is clear, therefore, that the chapter of healthcare emigration, which continues to weigh hundreds of millions of euros a year on the budget of the Calabria Region, is fueled by wrong and inconclusive healthcare policies such as those currently adopted in Cosenza.

De Salazar continues to praise his only apparent successes in a completely vapid and dangerous manner, referring for example to the control of spending, which seems to find its panacea in the 20% cut in spending on medicines.

Columbus’ egg was discovered by the super consultant all-rounder, with a degree in philosophy, who is accompanied by a group of consultants of unproven ability, indeed, some of whom are recent graduates and with their first experience, paid a total of millions, yes, millions of euros , with the money of Calabrian taxpayers.

In this case, where did the Recovery Plan and the spending review go?

To continue talking about waste of resources, it is enough to cite the case of the building, formerly home to the personnel offices, which is completely emptied of men and things to make room for the whim of creating a clinic center in its place; without having carried out any type of assessment, not taking into account the cost of adapting the premises, without planning, financing and, what’s more, on a property that is not owned by the organisation.

The current result is a harmful and useless waste of economic resources for removals, the inconvenience for employees who were previously located in two buildings and are now crowded into one, with bunk desks and in sanitary rooms inadequate, while an entire building it has remained abandoned to neglect and decay for almost a year.

Given the situation, dear President and Commissioner of Acta, I invite you to reflect carefully, the fate of healthcare and the entire community of the province of Cosenza depends on your decision.

During the electoral campaign you assured that healthcare would return to the hands of the Calabrians, so let’s not be fooled by the self-assurance of some people who were only born in Calabria and who today appear to be primarily responsible for the worsening of the general performance of our hospital.

We allow Calabrians to heal themselves in their own land.

Katya Dear

Regional councilor
