first questions about the new Administration • Front Page

Politics

The “event” of the administrative elections has just ended and the City of Mazara del Vallo, despite the fact that controversies, invectives, stories of myths, fairy tales and legends still persist on social media, between the protagonists with their “followers” (in some cases also “haters”), begins, or at least should, resume his daily life. It is expected that the new mayor, the clear winner, the reconfirmed Salvatore Quinci (pictured), will be able to restart the administrative machine with the official designation of his councilor team, certainly an expression of the coalition of the five lists that exceeded 40% of the preferences .

Quinci has great responsibilities that derive from over 12 thousand votes (almost 47% of voters) who chose him to lead the City for another five years. He will have to be the mayor of everyone, his is an imperative mandate, and not only of his closest supporters. Five years ago the City was divided after the ballot, this time there are the conditions for the start of a new course, it will then be history, in the long term, that will give its ruling. Today the City needs a “social peace” to acquire that much-needed sense of community which in truth has never existed except in the face of emergencies or serious albeit impromptu events, such as Covid19 or the kidnapping of its fishermen.

Returning to strictly administrative questions. There are five councilors already designated: Germana Abbagnato (on the Quinci Sindaco list), Vito Torrente (on the Fratelli d’Italia list), Vito Billardello (on the Political Observatory list), Gianfranco Casale (on the Political Participation list), Rino Giacalone (in the Freedom list quota). The new Quinci Council, we will call it “second edition”, should be completed with two more councillors, both, we believe, expressions of the two lists that were strongest within the coalition. One of the first list of the coalition, with 2674 votes, the second in the City after the DC, i.e. the list prepared by Salvatore Quinci himself: here the strongest name is that of the most voted on the list, i.e. the former councilor Francesco Di Liberti, to whom, however, the position of new president of the municipal council could be assigned; if instead he were appointed councilor again he would leave his place on the Council to another from the list, as would happen for Germana Abbagnato and, in Political Participation, for Gianfranco Casale who would leave his place on the Council to Salvatore Gianquinto and Arianna D’Alfio respectively.

For the position of councilor we are also talking about Dr. Pino Bianco (candidate on the Political Observatory list but not elected) and Matteo Bommarito (outgoing councilor but not elected on the Libertà list of which he is city coordinator). The other councilor would claim to be Fratelli d’Italia, and here the names would be two, moreover always allies in recent years: Nicola Norrito or Antonio Colicchia; beyond the choice, they would receive the delegation of Finance and Budget. In the case of Di Liberti’s appointment to these delegations, Francesco Santangelo could also return to being councilor (he also did not have a positive response as a councilor candidate); we need to understand how the internal dialogue will develop within the Mazara coordination of Meloni’s Party which received 2,257 votes (8.8%) as a list.
