BARI – A prisoner of Moroccan origins attempted to escape yesterday morning from Bari prison, taking advantage of the fact that the officer supervising the so-called ‘walks’ had been diverted to the urgent, “fake” accompaniment of another prisoner under the regime High security in hospital. But the scene was almost like a movie: the fugitive first climbed the wall, overcoming it, then went down into the enclosure and climbed the surrounding wall, but instead of disappearing he took a wrong turn to arrive straight at the management offices, where he was promptly blocked and taken back to the detention departments.

SAPPE, an independent prison police union, reported the news with a note: «What would have happened if the prisoner had managed to escape and had hurt some citizens? Perhaps a case would have been opened against the policemen as well as the prison leaders for not having guaranteed safety, while it would be more appropriate to better control who manages the health service inside the Bari prison, where the rules would be violated on many occasions precise which provide for the release of prisoners from prison to hospital facilities only in the presence of serious danger for the prisoners”.

«We have information that the “urgent” accompaniment of the prisoner was caused by an argument that broke out around 8.30 in the morning. The doctor on duty did not take any action. At approximately 12.30 he was visited by the dentist who, after having detected the loss of a tooth, requested urgent accompaniment to the hospital, under guard. Among other things, the inmate entered the emergency room under code green and the wait was very long.”
