The research activities were the subject of a public notice of expression of interest issued in 2019 by the Marche Museum Center – General Directorate of Museums of the then Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (now the Ministry of Culture), in the scope of the financing relating to the “Verification of seismic risk, reduction of vulnerability, restoration – Program of interventions DM 19/02/2018 – Cap. 8105/4” for the State Fortress of Gradara.

The study was conducted by the four universities in the Marche region: Polytechnic University of Marche, project leader, with the coordination of prof. Stefano Lenci, University of Camerino, University of Macerata and University of Urbino “Carlo Bo”.

The research has deepened indirect knowledge, with particular regard to archival research, the physical and mechanical characterization of building materials, the analysis of residual consistency and previous restorations, the verification of structural aspects, and has returned a documentary corpus updated on the fortress and management tools of the acquired data. Among the most important results are: the reconstruction of the different settlement structures of the fortified complex over time and the digital modeling of the same aimed at 3D printing for ‘expanded’ accessibility to cultural contents.

The results of the research will soon be published by Gangemi Editore, as part of the Antico/Futuro series.

The event obtained the patronage of the Order of Architects and Engineers of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, of the Federation of Orders of Engineers of the Marche and of the Italian Institute of Castles – Marche Section.
