It arrived this morning, Wednesday 12 June 2024, at the port of Marina di Carrara (Massa Carrara) the Ocean Viking ship of the NGO SOS Mediterranee with 64 migrants on board rescued in two different operations.
The ship, which entered the port around 7.15am, reached the Tuscan coast after having rescued migrants in the southern Mediterranean in the Libyan SAR area on 8 June. For the port of Marina di Carrara it is overall the thirteenth landing since 2023the fourth of 2024.

This time too, the rescue at sea left the drama behind. Among the people recovered and placed in slavery, also the lifeless body of a man.
“We were assigned the port of Marina di Carrara, over 1000 kilometers away – the NGO said in recent days – Assigning distant ports Italian authorities are emptying the central Mediterranean of vital relief assetsso they let these tragic events continue to happen.”
For Ocean Viking it is the second time at the Apuan port of call. It had arrived earlier on January 30, 2023 with 95 people on boardthe first of thirteen total landings at the port of Marina di Carrara.
The reception operations on the dock and the disembarkation procedures are coordinated by the Prefecture of Massa Carrara. On the dock there were volunteers, health support and law enforcement, as well as staff from the Port Authority and the Port Authority.
The migrants will receive the first checks on board, and will then be accompanied by buses to the nearby Imm-CarraraFiere exhibition complex for identification procedures and medical checks. After being refreshed, the migrants will finally leave for the reception facilities selected throughout Italy.
