Improve the quality of care and conditions of stay in the general medicine department of the “San Giovanni di Dio” hospital in Agrigento, contributing, with a space dedicated to reading, to humanize the care paths. In summary, these are the words of the beautiful gesture made by the Rotary Clubs of Agrigento and Aragona of donating a shelf containing a hundred volumes of various kinds to the patients in the department and their families.
“Reading is a way to take care of yourself – commented the head of the general medicine operational unit, Giuseppa Mira – and the presence of books in the ward can offer a lot to our patients: comfort, motivation, well-being and a sense of continuity with normal everyday life. I believe that today is a beautiful gift that puts at the center not the patient in the strict sense but the person in his broader, physical, psychological and social dimension”. The donation of the volumes took place yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 11 June, during a short but intense ceremony attended by Giuseppe La Mendola and Celestino Saia, presidents respectively of the Rotary Clubs of Agrigento and Aragon, the extraordinary commissioner of Provincial Health Authority of Agrigento, Giuseppe Capodieci, the ASP health director, Emanuele Cassarà, the health director of the unit, Onofrio Cacciatore, the former director of the municipal library of Agrigento and AVULSS volunteer, Mara Barbagallo, the entire team of the medical department general and several Rotary associates. Thanks were directed to the Rotary Clubs and all the participants by Commissioner Capodieci who emphasized the value of the gesture in terms of the humanisation of assistance and sanctioned the value of the synergy between the public body and the world of associations in achieving important goals municipalities oriented towards the well-being of people. The speech of the medical director Emanuele Cassarà was also of the same tone and he also wanted to express strong praise to the staff of the general medicine department for their commitment, sense of belonging and professionalism shown both in their daily activities and in dealing with critical issues contingent.
