Romario Benzar he arrived in Salento in the 2019-2020 season for a sum close to 2 million euros.
The Romanian full-back was in the national team and in the intentions of Mauro Meluso, Lecce’s sporting director at the time, he had to represent the certainty of the Giallorossi on the right wing. To tell the truth, the defensive side also knew how to disengage on the left wing.
Totally negative experience
In any case, Benzar’s experience in Salento was very negative. In that season he made 4 appearances – 3 in Serie A and one in the Italian Cup – never giving the impression of being up to the task.
In the same year he was sent on loan to Serie B, specifically to Perugia, to allow him to mature and settle into Italian football, taking advantage of the less frenetic rhythms of the cadet championship. Even there, however, he was unable to impose himself, playing only 4 parts of the match.
The return to Romania
At the end of the year, despite the fact that the contract was still owned by Lecce and the Salento club paid his salary handsomely, Benzar returned to Romania and remained there, without further rings or jolts in his career.
This season he wore the shirt of FC Botosani, a club that plays in the Romanian first division and which finished sixteenth in the league. In the past, however, he wore the shirt of Uta Urad, the team for which Catalin Vulturar spent 3 months on loan this season.
Difficult environment but…
Benzar can be considered an absolutely wrong investment on the part of the technical guide of that season. The full-back, despite showing good qualities in his championship, was absolutely not ready to make the leap to Serie A and as soon as he arrived he immediately seemed inadequate for the championship level.
After the Italian misadventures, Benzar also left the national team and now at 32 years old he will hardly be able to relive the emotion of a call-up with Romania.
