Better grades and more self-confidence: a study reveals the benefits of online teaching

Rome, 11 June. – Taking lessons and repetitions with an online tutor makes you more self-confident and psychologically better prepared to face tests and exams. This was revealed by research conducted by Tricia Thrasher, Director of Research of Immerse, a platform specialized in virtual reality learning, who analyzed the responses of approximately 500 students in Italy provided by the online learning platform GoStudent. The pupils involved received support mostly in subjects such as mathematics, science, English and other foreign languages.

Children and young people aged 6 to 18 participated in the study, therefore belonging to different school levels, from primary to secondary school (high school): 84% of those interviewed, thanks to online tutoring, improved their grades at school especially in the long term. This is the highest figure in all of Europe, when compared with those of France, Spain, Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom.

Again, 84% of those interviewed declared that online lessons and the consequent improvement in grades at school increased their confidence and awareness. According to the GoStudent study, capable of “reaching” even students who live in the most remote corners of Italy, the greatest increase is in primary school pupils with 82%, a crucial age group for growth scholastic and personal.

Therefore, the emotional well-being of students goes hand in hand with results: the latest Report on the Future of Education by GoStudent 2024 highlights not only the importance of more personalized education, but also of greater attention to the mental health of students Boys.

86% of parents in Italy are convinced that teachers must have the necessary flexibility to adapt their teaching methods to the needs of students, not only to achieve better results, but also for school inclusion.
Dr. Tricia Thrasher explains, “As a researcher I am deeply interested in the correlation between personalized educational support and student outcomes. This collaboration with GoStudent provided a unique opportunity to analyze diverse and extensive data, allowing me to explore the impacts of one-on-one tutoring. I was particularly surprised to discover that 84% of students in Italy who reported increased confidence also noticed improvements in their grades. This significant relationship signals that personalized tutoring not only improves academic performance, but also plays a critical role in boosting students’ confidence, which is crucial to their long-term success.”

The safety of children is certified precisely by the use of technology: 77% of those interviewed say they are more comfortable in a world surrounded by digital, a growing figure compared to the previous year.

Felix Ohswald, CEO and co-founder of GoStudent, adds: “Dr. Thrasher’s study provides concrete evidence of what we have long believed: personalized learning, when supported and approached as a collaboration, significantly increases student confidence and academic performance. The fact that more than three in four students experienced a substantial increase in self-confidence through personalized tutoring is a powerful testament to the impact of one-on-one educational support.”
