Starting from Saturday 15 June, the Tournament of the Veliterni districts “Cesare Ottaviano Augusto”. The different districts of the city will compete with each other as in last year, but with some small innovations. The 8 teams representing the city districts will be able to field an over 17 team and an under 17 team. And it doesn’t end here, because the competition – unlike what happened in the last edition – will be 11-a-side football and will last more than a month.
If last year the Municipality organized the event itself, this year the organization of the Tournament will be entrusted to ASD Rayo Velletrano, the Veliterna football club playing in the Third Category. The company was in fact the only one to participate in the tender, which saw the Municipality financed with a sum of 15,000 euros for the “carrying out of the organization and implementation service of the Football Tournament event – City of Velletri – CO Augusto ”.
In this regard, once the figure was revealed, some discordant opinions did not take long to appear, with the Greens and the Italian Left writing in a statement: “This initiative should not burden the public body: free legal aid could have been enough! The 15,000 euros allocated to this football tournament are a clear example of waste of public resources, which could have been invested in initiatives of greater public interest”.
However, the reply from the Councilor for Sport Paolo Felci was not long in coming, highlighting how the competition of the Veliterno districts is part of aSummer Veliterna 2024 full of activities of every kind and type. The “Caesar Octavian Augustus” Tournament its spirit is to create a sense of belonging to the city through what is probably the most popular sport.
The kick-off of the competition is scheduled for Saturday 15 June at 4.30 pm, at the Giovanni Scavo Campo Awhere a triangular event will be held – in which Old Glory VJs, Real Velletri Fans and Velletri Fan Groups will compete – in honor of Clelio Busini, Ugo Mastrogirolamo, Maurizio Paesani and Daniele Silvestri.
The opening match of the Tournament will then be played at 7pm, which will pit the South-West and North-East districts against each other. Those present then – starting from 9pm – will be able to watch, thanks to a giant screen that will be specially installed, the first match of theItaly to European Football Championships in Germanywhich will see the Azzurri face theAlbania. All accompanied by music, street food and entertainment for children.
Last year the district tournament was won by the Southwestwho had beaten South-East in the final with a score of 8-7.
