Milan | Sesto San Giovanni – New Railway Station: demolition of the old station begins

Milan Sesto San Giovanni. COIMA SGR (“COIMA”), leader in the investment, development and management of real estate assets on behalf of institutional investors, e Redo SGR Benefit company (“Redo”), leader in affordable housing and urban regeneration with social impact (together “the two Companies”), announce the start of works on demolition of the current station in Piazza Primo Maggio in Sesto San Giovanniwhich will make way for the new station designed by Studio Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) with Ottavio Di Blasi & Partners in collaboration with SCE Project.

The construction work of the new station was entrusted to the company Cimolai SpA in 2021 through a public tender announced by MilanoSesto SpA, owner of the areas. The project is at the link.

The project consists of the creation of a stepover walkway of the Milan-Monza railway line with a length of 90 meters and a width of 18 meters and connections to the platform platforms via stairs covered by shelters. Over the course of last week, the new walkway – which will constitute the fulcrum of the new Sesto airport – was partially opened in order to allow travelers access to the platforms, while the underpass was temporarily closed to be redeveloped and reopened at the end of the works , renovated and connected with the new station system.

There structure coverage it is completely glazed and supports 2,400 m2 of photovoltaic cells which will make the new building independent from an energy point of view.

The contract also includes the redefinition – under the coordination of RPBW – of the square in front of the station (Piazza Primo Maggio), affected by the planting of approximately 60 trees of the sophora japonica species, as well as the creation of an innovative and technological bike station.

The demolitions will be completed by August 2024, while the completion of the construction of the new station is expected in July 2025.

The intervention is part of the path undertaken in November 2023 with the entry of COIMA and Redo into the MilanoSesto project – the largest urban regeneration project in Italy and among the largest in Europe, with a total territorial area of ​​over 1 million square meters of building area (SL) – through the acquisition of 100% of the company MilanoSesto SpA and of the affiliated residential component of the “Unione Zero” lot, for a total surface area equal to 90% of the entire area.

The project, thanks to the contribution of the financing banks – Intesa Sanpaolo, Unicredit, BPM desk And IFIS – will contribute to the recovery and further relaunch of a fundamental territory for the Milan metropolitan area, Lombardy and the country.
