MODENA. Modena mourns the passing of Adelmo Bastonipartisan, historic trade union leader, born in 1930, originally from Castelfrancowhere he continued to live after retiring from public life, also carrying out voluntary work.

Bastoni was a reference for an entire generation of young trade unionists, trained in the values ​​of Resistence and of Constitution. «We said goodbye for the last time a few months ago in Gaggio at the presentation of her dear friend Savina’s book, dedicated to her mother Gabriella Degli Esposti. Even in an already less than optimal state of health, Adelmo was, as always, incisive and lucid”, recalled the provincial president of Anpi Vanni Bulgarelli.

Adelmo’s story

Adelmo Bastoni, from a peasant family, began his activity in the 1950s as secretary of the local Chamber of Labour. He was born and raised in the CGIL. In 1955 and until 1963 he moved to the provincial Federmezzadri covering various roles and finally that of provincial secretary. In 1963 and until 1979 he was first organiser, then secretary of the Provincial Chamber of Labor of Modena. In the years 1979-1988 he moved to Bologna in the regional CGIL. In 1988 he retired and was elected regional secretary of the Spi/Cgil pensioners union for two terms until 1997.
After retirement he continued to carry out voluntary activities in the Castelfranco area, he was also president of the Asp Delia Repetto, a structure for the assistance of self-sufficient and non-self-sufficient elderly people in Castelfranco Emilia.

The memory of the CGIL
«With him goes a piece of the Chamber of Labor of Modena, a great man and a great union leader whose history is comparable to the history of the twentieth century. He continued to be an example for our entire management team,” he says Daniele Dieci secretary of the CGIL of Modena – he also participated in the 120th anniversary of the CGIL, and has always been close to our initiatives, a point of reference also for local politics”. In September 2016 the pensioners union Spi Cgil presented his biography “My roots in the land and in the union”, written by Bastoni himself together with his nephew Dario, produced by Spi with the care of Adriana Barbolini And Luisa Zuffi. The autobiographical work is the result of the Spi Cgil memory project which aims, among others, to valorise the writings and testimonies of former union leaders and activists.

The memory of the Democratic Party and the mayor of Castelfranco
Even in retirement, as mentioned, his commitment to the community continued, turning into volunteer activities in his hometown. The provincial secretary of the Democratic Party Roberto Solomita: «In a period in which work is increasingly precarious for many categories, that of Bastoni, with a life spent in defense of democracy, workers’ rights, on the right side, of the weakest, represents an example for the entire Modena PD ».
He also remembers it with emotion mayor of Castelfranco, Gianni Gargano: «Adelmo Bastoni, a partisan, has left us, a man who dedicated his life, until the end, to making our community better. May the earth be light on you, dear Adelmo, we will do everything to continue the work and commitment in the wake of what you have taught us and always faithful to the values ​​for which you fought”.
