Milan, orange alert for thunderstorms: torrential rain, concert in Piazza Duomo cancelled. The Municipality: «Far from the trees»

A violent storm hit Milan around 9.30pm on Sunday 9 June. And it is precisely for phenomena like these that it was issued the orange alert. There disturbance of Atlantic origin, rapidly approaching, it is still bringing unstable conditions with even very heavy rainfall. It was supposed to start in Piazza del Duomo at 9.30pmthe concert of the Filarmonica della Scala. But already at the beginning the public – equipped with umbrellas – had to face torrential rain. There are approximately 500 seats set up for the event. The performance was suspended and then cancelled.

Water mixed with sand falls from the sky. Already on Saturday evening, after a light drizzle, whoever had left the car on the street found it muddy: it was the sand – or rather the dust – of the Sahara desert. This is because the clouds that are covering Northern Italy come from the contrast between a cyclone off the British Isles and the promontory African anticyclonic on the Mediterranean basin, which recalls currents from the desert of North Africa. There sand it remains suspended in the highest altitudes of the atmosphere, ready to be dumped on the ground with the rain, leaving dust on cars. According to the Skiron weather model, up to 10 grams of sand per square meter could arrive. TO Bergamo the phenomenon is particularly evident: even the sky has taken on a yellowish color.

Sunday afternoon The UCL, the local crisis unit of the Municipality of Milan, met with the participation of the Civil Protection Authority and the Directorates involved, to examine the situation and coordinate the actions to be taken. «Storm phenomena – explains the Municipality – could intensify, with heavy rain and wind, especially in the evening. Citizens are invited to do not stop in parks and gardens, and in any case under the trees and in their vicinity, as well as near construction sites, outdoor areas and tents. It is also important not to stop in the areas at risk of flooding in Seveso and Lambro and in the vicinity of underpassesand ensure the safety of objects and vases on the balconies and all the artefacts that could be moved by the weather. We invite you to pay maximum attention to any communications that may be released in the next few hours by the Civil Protection Authority of the Municipality of Milan. The municipal operations center (COC) remains active at all times to coordinate interventions.”
