Strong thunderstorms, orange alert in Como and Lombardy. Sahara sand rains from the sky

Compared to this morning’s forecasts, civil protection raises the alert level from yellow to orange, due to strong storms arriving in Como and Lombardy. The heaviest rainfall should not be in the city but in the Brianza Comasca and in the hydraulic hub of Milan. Furthermore, as many of you may have noticed from the first light showers in the late morning, in some areas it is raining Sahara sand. In various areas of the central-north these days the sky has a particular colour, almost with a milky halo enveloping the clouds. The reason is very easily verifiable by looking at parked cars or clothes left hanging out to dry in some areas: the objects are often covered in sand. Our peninsula has been hit by a massive transport of sand coming from the Sahara desert. Some sporadic rain did the rest, depositing the dust on the ground.

The new civil protection alert

“The collapse of the anticyclonic promontory on the Mediterranean allows the transit of a cooler depression core over central-northern Italy, with an increase in instability during today, Sunday 9 June. From the central hours of the day, scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible over the Region, with greater probability of strong thunderstorms from mid-afternoon, initially affecting the western sectors and moving from South to North, during the afternoon and evening moving across the central plain and intensifying the phenomena during the night between today and Monday they will be attenuating and moving towards the East. In the Prealpine and Alpine areas, ventilation reinforcements at altitudes above 700-800 metres.

The removal of the low depression will leave the Region during tomorrow, Monday 10 June, a weakly unstable flow from the West-Southwest which will intensify the diurnal cycle: probable showers or local thunderstorms on the mountains in the central hours, extending over the plains in evening and night”
