Acireale / Lack of graves: consultation table between the municipality and the company that manages the cemetery

A consultation table has opened between the Municipality of Acireale and the San Sebastiano Srl, company that manages the Acireale cemetery in project financing.
A note from the mayor’s spokesperson explains that the general secretary Giuseppe Scilla has called an operational meeting in the Council Room at Palazzo di Città to follow up on the address of the cemetery services councilor Giuseppe Vasta.

The CEO Franco Musumeci and the representatives of San Sebastiano Srl and the mayor Roberto Barbagallo took part at the table. Also the councilor for Cemetery Services Giuseppe Vasta, the president of the third council commission Enzo Di Mauro and the manager of the Technical Area Andrea Giudice.

In the policy document signed by councilor Vasta, the convening of an operational meeting is requested to discuss the possibility of modifying the Project Financing. The modification would consist in the transformation of the planned chapels from noble (private) chapels to public chapels. This “considers the shortage of graves in the municipal cemetery, and the provision in the Project Financing of noble (family) chapels”. Furthermore, given the cost involved in purchasing the area and carrying out the work by private individuals, even today the areas intended for noble chapels remain unsold. This causes both economic damage and, above all, damage to the availability of niches.”

In the Acireale cemetery, find spaces to make up for the lack of niches

As Administration – explains the mayor Roberto Barbagallosharing the proposal of the third council commission, we strongly wanted to start a discussion with the offices and the company to evaluate the possibility of remodulating the Project. What the Administration is asking for is to think about the refunctionalization of a Project started way back in 2013. There are fifteen years left until the deadline and I believe that the Municipality of Acireale and San Sebastiano are in a position to move in synergy.

We asked the offices and the company to verify the possibility of recovering spaces, because there is and will be the problem of a shortage of niches. And San Sebastiano proved to be absolutely available. It would also be important to be able to exploit currently decommissioned or abandoned areas. The company and the offices will try to verify its feasibility, as envisaged by the Project. Because this would allow a significant increase in places and the construction of the crematorium. This is a service that today forces many citizens of Aceto to move to neighboring municipalities.”
