International wine city competition: Calabria wins 16 medals

Sixteen medals, including four Grand Gold Medals, 11 gold and one silver, were won by Calabria in the XXII edition of the International Wine Competition of Città del Vino

Saveria Sesto, of the “L’Arber della Vite” association and president of a tasting commission in Gorizia where the competition took place, commented on the medal table with punctuality and satisfaction. The Grand Medal was awarded with 93 points to the 2023 Cirò rosé from the Vulcano winery followed with 92.8 by Segno rosé from the Librandi winery, with 92 from the Moscato passito Governo di Saracena from Feudo San Severino and with 92 from the CentocamerAnd passito wine from the Barone Macrì winery.

The gold medals (scores from 89.8 to 86.4) were awarded to the Theorema and Luna Piena rosés from the Termine Grosso company, to Segno Ciro’ doc bianco from Librandi, to Mastro Terenzio passito from Feudo San Severino, to Josef 47 Cirò doc rosé from Cantina Vinci, in Caparbio from Cantine Caccamo, at Metafore 2021 from Azienda Vinicola di Alfano Silvana, Arkaios 2021 of the Archeo-enological of Francesco Bafaro, in Zonaro of the Tenuta Santoro and the white Greco of the Cantina Statti.

In the organic wines category, wines with sustainable and low impact techniques, thanks to congenial microclimatic conditions and agronomic technique, the gold medal went to Crete del Falco 2020 and silver to Don Fabrizio Anniversario 2022 both of the Termine Grosso company.

«In truth – argued Saveria Sesto – the competition marked the triumph of Gaglioppo with 5 rosé wines that offer shades and flavor of different interpretation and plasticity, even more than the classic red typology, which in any case asserts itself with 4 labels, but also the pure Calabrian Nerello, the Greco di Bianco, the Malvasia, the Moscato and the Castiglione which represented the ampelographic panorama of Calabria and have ennobled well-established bottles, but also new entries.

Among the white wines, among the first for aromas and elegance, the white wine from the Greco bianco variety of both the Librandi winery and the Statti winery has established itself.

Further confirmation of the value of these results – continued Saveria Sesto – comes from the companies that win more medals with their wines and collect the precious metal (4 the Termine Grosso company, two Librandi and two Feudo San Severino), from the small and young companies which are appearing for the first time in the Città del vino competition with new labels (Caccamo di Taurianova and Archeo-enological winery), from the different wine-growing territories represented by Cirò a Saracena, Acri, Roccabernarda, Capo Spulico, Taurianova, Lamezia Terme and Locri .

Without forgetting the oenologists – he concluded – who transform the grapes according to the bizarreness of the vintages and the most congenial technique and who in harmony with the entrepreneurs work with high quality standards to outline a proud enological Calabria, today looked at with careful respect and renewed interest in the Italian panorama. Among 1200 wines in the competition from all over Italy and abroad, the 16 precious medals are a loot to show off, capitalize and narrate.”
