Padua: Work begins on the tram construction site between via Tommaseo and Gozzi

An important construction site for the SMART system begins on Monday 10 June 2024, namely the junction between via Gozzi and via Tommaseo, the focal point between the station and the Pace stop, at the intersection with via Gozzi, which affects both the two new lines Sir2 and Sir3 a Padua.

Work has begun on the tram construction site between via Tommaseo and Gozzi

It is a construction site that has a relatively significant impact on traffic but very complex not only for the civil works planned but also because it involves cooperation between different companies, namely those that were awarded the Sir3 contract, with CSE – Consorzio Stabile Europeo as agent, and those that were awarded the east lot of Sir2 , with Vittadello Spa as agent.

In fact, after a series of evaluations with the companies on the best ways to proceed with the construction once via Gozzi was completed, it was decided to proceed immediately with the Gozzi / Tommaseo knot, closing the entire road and working simultaneously on multiple sub-construction sites to ensure easier work for companies and reduced intervention times.

The creation of a platform

On this occasion we will proceed with the construction of the section of platform from via Gozzi to the station roundabouts, which will be built by the companies of Sir3, and with the section of platform up to the intersection with via Rezzonico, then up to the Court, which will be built by the companies of Sir2 east lot.

The project

The areas of competence of Sir3 will be set aside on Monday 10 June 2024, therefore from station roundabouts up to beyond via Gozzi and in the next few weeks, by the end of the month, the area of competence of Sir2, i.e. the north lane of via Tommaseo, will be closed.

The road system

  • For those arriving from Ponte Omizzolo towards the station, the current arrangement remains in force, i.e. turning right onto Via Trieste.
  • Those arriving from via Tommaseo, from the Fiera, will no longer be able to go straight towards the station but will be obliged to turn right onto via Goldoni and then via della Pace or left onto via Rezzonico.
  • For those who exit via Rezzonico onto via Gozzi it will be possible to take via Tommaseo which will only be open in the direction of Stanga.
  • Access to Park Tommaseo and residents will be guaranteed.
  • The traffic of the two roundabouts on the east side of the station will not undergo changes.

The construction site will last until autumn

The mobility councillor of the Municipality of Padua comments:

“It is the first of a series of construction sites that we are defining and that we will announce in the next few days because, as we have always said, we will take advantage of the summer and the closure of schools to start many works in such a way as to create as little inconvenience as possible for citizens . We can define this as the first real SMART construction site because we are talking about a crossing that involves multiple lines and is fundamental for the entire system. In fact, we must remember that in the Sir3 project this junction was not envisaged in this way but when we obtained the Sir2 funding we reviewed the projects and already on the occasion of the closure of Via Gozzi we had announced the probable continuity with the construction site of the system SMART. After much investigation by the RUP and the companies we have decided to proceed in this way and this allows us to reduce the complexity of creating such a strategic node. It will be a crucial summer in the development of the tram lines and once again I would like to reiterate that on our part and on the part of the companies there is a maximum effort in organizing the construction sites to minimize the impacts, but it is clear that we are entering the heart of the construction of a system of over 35km of tram line and that in the next two years Padua will experience its greatest transformation.”

Diego Galiazzo, APS Holding, RUP of Sir3 and Sir2 adds: “It is a particularly delicate issue and we have chosen to proceed with a single construction site, closing the area and completing it completely in one go to work on this stretch in the summer period. A construction site for which we have worked a great coordination job between different companies and worked in close synergy to identify the best ways to guarantee, on the one hand, being able to work easily and on the other, containing the inconveniences.”

The technical director of civil works for Sir3 Johnny Viel comments: “This total closure of via Tommaseo is dictated by the type of intervention we are going to carry out. The Sir3/Sir2/Stazione interchange node on the map looks like intersecting lines but it involves 6 interchanges and 3 cruises, i.e. cross intersections, a very complicated section and impossible to achieve by closing only half the road. For this reason we have decided together with the Municipality and APS to close the entire Via Tommaseo and work in the summer because this method facilitates our work in an important way. On Monday we will close the affected section, on Wednesday the asphalt milling is scheduled, then we will carry out excavations, screeds, polyferes, platforms and the electrical substation on the west side sidewalk in correspondence with the two roundabouts of the station.”

Giacomo Fasolato, manager of Vittadello Spa concludes: “As you know, we presented the executive projects of the projects last week and in the meantime we organized ourselves to be able to be at work on via Tomaseo immediately after the Sir3 undertakings. We will start by the end of the month and at the same time we will work on the station square, for which we are defining the final traffic details and which we will present next week. This, combined with the station, will be the first stretch of Sir2 on the road and creating it now has required an effort but also on our part the will to minimize inconvenience to citizens and for this reason we will work at the same time taking advantage of this closure of via Tommaseo without avoiding subsequent impediments.”
