The dinner of a thousand becomes the dinner of 1,400 and the queue to enter the space set up in Viale Tanini al Galluzzo is more than one hundred meters long. At 9pm there are still those who have to enter. The center-left candidate for mayor of Florence Sara Funaro ends her electoral campaign here, after a visit to the minimal houses of Rocca Tedalda. Mother Antonina and father Renzo are also at dinner. Funaro begins by remembering Massimiliano Pescini, then makes the final appeal to his family and those undecided to vote.
«Emotion and responsibility. In these long months I have always felt surrounded by the affection and strength of a community and by many citizens attentive to their Florence, in an electoral campaign which instead saw the others focus on attacks and slogans, not on the contents: I would have expected a much higher level – said Funaro – I want to thank everyone, from citizens to candidates to parties. I invite those who are undecided to think that there is a battle not only over projects but over the vision, ideals and identity of this city. We are the true center-left coalition, which has concrete projects, which wants to preserve and grow the values of Florence.”
In the second round he glides — «Today we campaign until midnight, let’s mobilize until the last second. We are confident, we feel a climate of enthusiasm that is growing” – but about Schmidt as opponent in the run-off he adds: “I hope he tries to really start to get to know Florence a little more and start talking about the city and the vision he has. As we have done in the streets and squares in recent months and as I have always done in these years as a councillor.”
At the dinner many colonels of the Democratic Party, parliamentarians, members of the council and the municipal council, the president of the Region Eugenio Giani, the outgoing mayor Dario Nardella, thanked by Funaro, who says: «This incompetent right that clings to Schmidt, and that like Renzi seems obsessed with me for some extra vote, it will be beaten on Saturday and Sunday. Sara could be the first mayor of Florence.”
