Fight against tax evasion, 10 million recovered

Over 10 million euros have been recovered through the fight against tax evasion from 52 municipalities in Bergamo for the last seven years. This is highlighted by the processing of the Welfare Department of the CISL of Bergamo on the MEF data regarding the contribution for the participation of the Municipalities of the province of Bergamo in the tax and contribution assessment activity (from 2016 to 2023, excluding 2022, the year for which the CISL Welfare Department of Bergamo explained that it was not possible to recover the figures).

A huge sum, which left five million euros in the coffers of the 52 participating Orobic municipalities (exactly 5,134,507.45 euros), 50% of the amount recovered from the tax authorities. «Every year – he explains Angelo Murabito, provincial secretary of CISL Bergamo – let’s do a study on the recovery of tax evasion. A theme we have always fought for. The data obtained by the Mef tell with numbers how much the 52 Bergamo Municipalities that have worked in this direction have managed to do and recover. In fact, each Administration can decide whether to participate in the tax and contribution assessment activity, through which it carries out an analysis and research on its citizens, based on what they declare and the life they actually have. This analysis is then provided to the tax authorities, who in the event of irregularities or evasion act to recover the amount evaded”.

Participating in the activity is certainly a cost for the Municipality, which is responsible for the initial analysis, but it then allows it to obtain 50% of the amount recovered and thus have funds for its municipal coffers. Funds which in some cases are also huge. The processing of the Welfare Department of the CISL of Bergamo on the MEF data shows how Bergamo has recovered over two million euros, Clusone just under 300 thousand euros, Cividate al Piano 240 thousand euros, Lovere even 911 thousand eurosTerno d’Isola 287 thousand euros and San Paolo d’Argo 209 thousand euros.

«It is a shame – he continues – that only 52 out of 243 Municipalities in the Bergamo area are participating in this action. The reasons why several Municipalities do not participate is certainly due to the cost. Carrying out the initial analysis is not always sustainable for everyone, especially for small municipalities. We are talking about figures that can be important for municipal budgets, which could help reduce taxes or respond to the ever-growing needs of the population, especially in the social field.” A more incisive and branched action, therefore, would certainly allow for greater recovery of money and also a greater fight against tax evasion. «The Municipalities may not act alone – she concludes – and this could help them. For example, you can move through the associated management in the various territorial areas. If several Municipalities work together they reduce the costs of participation and then obtain figures that can help the budgets. We hope that in this way the action to combat tax and social security evasion can be increasingly widespread and effective.”
