Chairs in the “living room” of the city, in front of the seafront between decay and abandonment. Waiting for the right dignity to be restored to Piazza Cavour where the construction site of the never-built garages still stands – which ended up in court in recent months – the area seems to have been taken as a makeshift home and shelter for some homeless people. But not only. On the photograph that is shown to the tourists, it is possible to distinguish construction site residues (some dangerous), waste of all kinds, the famous RFI tracks deposited and piled up in front of a scenario made up of chairs that make up a “living room” probably used by the homeless people who Inside the containers of the company that was carrying out the work, they found a place where they could go to sleep. It is the citizens who report it but also and above all the social group “Sons of Chiancarelle” between photos and videos: «Salerno is increasingly touristy, a new village on the seafront with an outdoor dining room overlooking the sea – they comment – the silence of the opposition from this city that seems to live elsewhere is surprising». The construction site is easily accessible, with the barriers torn down and dangerous, just as the pedestrian crossing is dangerous which – touristically speaking – does not give a beautiful postcard of Salerno, as well as the waste, the tall grass and the lack of care for the state of the places which continue to be (little) fenced. But we need to be patient and wait to try to restore and give decorum to that area that the Via Roma authority has chosen to “return to the citizens”. Justice time permitting (who has appointed a CTU) who should – in the next few days – provide a description of the state of the places, as reiterated by thethe councilor for public works, Dario Loffredo: «We are the first to want to give dignity to the place again, we are waiting for the judiciary’s time, the trials are held in courtrooms but we want to return the area to the people of Salerno, as a commitment made. We are also working to improve the conditions of the area in a short time, just as the side streets have been reopened and traffic restored.” Piazza Cavour therefore remains in the center and not only due to its location. The area in front of the Provincial Palace has long been under the scrutiny of citizens, the municipal administration and the judiciary. And between protests, obstacles, works left only on paper, a pandemic and disputes, a further issue now seems to be added, that of conditions and neglect, consequences of a time that seems to have stopped. The municipal administration led by Vincenzo Napoli follows the legal proceedings very carefully with all the city palace offices involved in the issue, from urban planning to mobility (with the reopening and restoration of the two side streets in recent weeks). , up to the legal sector. Precisely the latter, between papers, appeals and hearings, continues to move forward towards the objective: to return the square after the stoppage of the works for the construction of the garages by Parking Cavour Salerno and the consequent resolution of the concession of the area with the latter. After appeal to the PCS TAR against the decision of the city hall to “take back” the public land where only the underground works had been carried out, the administrative court declared the act inadmissible and passed the ball to the ordinary court while giving “right” to the municipal body regained possession of the island in front of the Province, at least to restore the road system that had been closed for years.

Meanwhile, during this month there may be glimmers of light regarding the waterfront area, on which the company has never operated. Then there could be news from an “economic” point of view: an injunction is pending on the institution’s coffers after Pcs’ own request for compensation of over 3 million euros which the Municipality opposed, requesting instead compensation equal to to 4 million euros.
