David Millsthe founder of NaturetrekI bought 50 hectares of land in Alto Molise to create a private nature reserve and has entrusted the environmental redevelopment and management of the area to two associations who deal with the protection of territories and fauna: Intramontes And Let’s save the bear.

Mills created Naturetrek in 1986 with his wife Maryanne, and despite having a background as a lawyer, he has always loved travel, mountains and wildlife. He has extensive experience in Europe, Australasia and Africa, and even more in India and the Himalayan countries, as well as extensive knowledge of their natural history. For two years he independently crossed every region of the Himalayas, studying and photographing his fauna. Since then he has written articles, contributed to books and led and organized many treks in that region and in Africa.

The Englishman’s latest move was the purchase of land and related woodland Pescolancianoin the locality Spotson the border with Pietrabbondante And Agnoneadjacent to Mab di Collemeluccio Reserve and in the vicinity of Celano – Foggia sheep track.

The area, visited in person by Mills and his team to attest to its conditions, despite being of great natural value, is in one been abandoned for several decades. For this reason the founder of Naturetrek decided to entrust her to the care of volunteers from the Intramontes and Save the Bear associations for thirty years.

The first objective of the associations is planning of a development plan, which includes the development of small businesses within an ancient farmhouse which will become the development center of the Reserve. To do this, the volunteers will start with the zoning of the Reserve and then with reconnaissances of the area since many areas, which were once occupied by pastures, are impassable and closed by dense vegetation.

“The management of this area has been entrusted to us so that we can experiment with innovative management methods that bring together micro-entrepreneurship also linked to training on these issues and nature conservation – he comments Caterina Paolombo of Intramontes to the microphones of Molise News – especially because we are in an area that is part of the Natura2000 network and because we are in an area where, following abandonment, biodiversity has already exploded and which represents an important corridor for fauna, capable of connecting the reserve of Collemeluccio and the parks of Abruzzo.
