In the evening, the extended centre-right coalition will present itself in Piazza Umberto I for the final rally of the engineer Grazia Cosentino, the candidate for mayor who brought together the “official” parties of the area and the moderates. Cosentino’s run immediately generated more than a few reactions from political contexts that did not agree with the choice to support him. The center-right defectors have structured the “Alliance for Gela”, focusing on Salvatore Scerra. Other political souls instead wanted to distance themselves from a sort of concertation between politics and the waste system. On several occasions, Cosentino’s role, among the management references of Impianti Srr (the in-house waste service), was harshly “reprimanded”. Previously, the former president of the Region Raffale Lombardo spoke about the “shadow governments” of the Srr (the companies regulating the local waste system), while this week the Ars parliamentarian Cateno De Luca, leader of “South calls north”, spoke raised the issue of the waste “lobby”, mainly recalling the Timpazzo case and the financing to expand the disposal site, planned with FSC funds despite an opinion from the specialist technical commission which raises various concerns. “It is now a mantra which we do not intend to follow up on, we do not go after Lombardo and De Luca – says DC commissioner Giuseppe Licata, one of the main supporters of the engineer Cosentino’s candidacy – they only want to denigrate our candidate, chosen by the parties and from the secretaries, without any other external intervention. Moreover, Grazia Cosentino is demonstrating that he has many young people and people who want to change the city at his side. The centre-right parties are with her as are the moderates. We are convinced you can be a winning model. Our coalition is united and compact.” The electoral outcome will tell whether the move to stand with the outsider Cosentino can lead to victory, after having decided not to focus on party candidates.
