Pesaro is Capital of Culture 2024

Among the most famous opera musicians of all time and the main Italian composer of the first half of the 19th century, the most illustrious citizen of Pesaro and undoubtedly the maestro Giacomo Rossini (Pesaro 1792 – Passy 1868), author of masterpieces including The Barber of Seville, William Tell, The Thieving Magpie, Cinderella and many others.

In the context of Rossini weeks scheduled from February 18th to March 6th 2024 to celebrate his birthday (29 February 1792), over 30 events were organized including concerts, exhibitions, meetings, dance, workshops for the little ones, tours of Rossini’s places. Thursday 29 February at 9pm to the Rossini Theater in Pesaro the concert took place Glory Massorganized by Rossini Opera Festival and the Rossini Conservatorywith the support of Intesa Sanpaolo in the context of Rossini Opera Festival.

First performed on 24 March 1820 in the Church of San Ferdinando in Naples, the Glory Mass was welcomed with such enthusiasm that it elicited long applause inside the sacred place and the attribution to Rossini of the qualification of a learned, serious, sublime composer. This liturgical work, however, remained unknown for more than a century, until, starting from the mid-1960s, the discovery of numerous sources gave Philip Gossett the opportunity to reconstruct its genesis and, subsequently, together with Giovanni Acciai di prepare the critical edition for the Rossini Foundation.
