There black stork nests in the Vergari Nature Reserve. A pair of specimens of the bird, which has slightly smaller proportions than the white one and a wingspan of 2 meterswas sighted during an excursion in the naturalistic oasis located in the western part of the Crotone Marquisate in the territory of Mesoraca.

Note the presence of the protected species, in an internal nesting site of the riverbed of the Reservewere the director and scientific coordinator of the Reserve, respectively the architect Emiliano Cistaro and the ethnobotanist Carmine Lupia. The vice-president of the Italian Ornithological Society Gianluca Congi also intervened on site and surveyed the site and photographed the specimens spotted.

“For all of us – said Cistaro – it is a historic day.
Knowing that the black stork lives in our territory, a rare species with only 36 nesting pairs in all of Italy, fills us with pride and, at the same time, with responsibility. Its presence – he added – is also testimony to the naturalistic value of the Reserve which, crossed by two rivers (the Vergari and the Reazio), offers 29 kilometers of paths between waterfalls rich in water, the eastern slopes of Mount Femminamorta and environmental riches enclosed in 220 hectares”.

“These are – said Lupia – two extraordinary specimens, in terms of beauty and importance, to which we now need to pay close attention. Not only because it is a species particularly protected by Italian laws and international conventions, but above all because their presence, which joins other pairs already resident in Sila, is proof of the impressive heritage of nature and culture that boasts Calabria and which needs to be more appreciated, both for its protection and for its ability to generate sustainable development”.
