“Rents in Rho cost too much”: the complaint from SOS Fornace

The social center denounces the high rents, which they say is also driven by the presence of MIND, and asks that the administration strengthen public housing services

Rho – Recently the SOS Fornace Social Center of Rho-Pero raises the alarm on housing situation in rhodenseunderlining not only the difficulty in finding public housing but also, and above all, the phenomenon of expensive rents which, particularly strong in Milan, is now spreading to the cities surrounding it, including Rho.

Commuters flee the city

The latest tender for public housing has depicted an alarming situation: Against 340 applications, only 4 accommodations were made available. This is a clear indicator of the housing emergency that our city is experiencing – They explain from their press release – The increase in rent prices is reaching levels that are pushing more and more people to leave Rho. Among these, there are commuters who in the past had chosen the city for its proximity to Milan and for the relatively lower rents.

The high rent and the MIND

They say there is also one of the causes of this increase what in reality should be an opportunity for relaunching the city: the MIND.

The proximity of Rho to the new MIND district, the future home of the scientific faculties of the State University, and the presence of the exhibition center, the epicenter of highly attractive events such as the Salone del Mobile, are transforming the local real estate market in a worrying way, so much so as to affect significantly the right to live. Paradoxically – they continue – also MIND workers, engaged in structures such as the Galeazzi hospital or it Human Technopolethey are forced to search accommodation in more distant cities due to the increase in the cost of rent in Rho, despite the intentions of the municipal administration.

Proposed solutions

“This is what happens when policies are delegated to the market housing. We believe that to address the ongoing housing emergency it is essential to increase the supply of public housing. It is unacceptable that hundreds of families remain homeless or live in precarious housing conditions”

The solution that the social center proposes is that the municipal administration intervene “With determination on agreements relating to new urban development projectsrequiring real estate operators that a portion of the newly built housing be sold to the Municipality and allocated to public housing services. Housing is a fundamental right. We ask for courageous housing policies, which counteract speculation and the logic of profit, guaranteeing access to dignified and stable housing for everyone.”
