Rivian R1S and R1T, the second generation arrives. More power and technology

Rivian introduced the second generation of R1T and R1S. Although the look of the pickup and SUV has not received any particular updates, the automaker says that the news is all under the bodywork given that these models have been “completely redesigned“, benefiting from hundreds of technical improvements and improved performance.

The design, as mentioned, does not change much, however we find new front headlights and revised rear lights. In addition to this, Rivian has introduced new alloy wheels that improve efficiency. The headlights will receive Adaptive Drive Beam technology later this year. Also available are new body colors and new interior trims.

Speaking of the cabin, there is a new audio system, a revamped ambient lighting system and a panoramic electrochromic glass roof. The new models can also count on a infotainment system with a completely revised interface and based on Unreal Engine. Furthermore, the digital key also arrives. An iPhone, an Apple Watch or some Google Pixel models will be enough to access and start the cars.

Rivian also introduced a new audio system with Dolby Atmos. Also new, the Connect+ subscription service which supports video streaming via Google Cast, provides access to more than 3,000 apps and also access to the Apple Music catalog with over 100 million songs and 30,000 playlists, without advertising.

THE MAIN FEATURES

The new Rivian R1T and R1S can count on a new platform which made it possible to improve the performance and autonomy of the pickup and SUV. The car manufacturer has significantly reduced the wiring of the electrical architecture and redesigned the thermal system based on the heat pump, improving comfort inside the passenger compartment and reducing the loss of autonomy.

All versions of the pickup and SUV have all-wheel drive. Specifically, the car manufacturer’s new models will be offered with two electric motors (one in front and one behind), three electric motors (two at the back and one at the front) e four electric motors (two at the back and two at the front). All Rivian engines are designed, engineered and manufactured in-house.

According to what has been said, the dual motor version will be able to count on 665 hp (496 kW / 674 HP) and will allow acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) in 3.4 seconds (Performance version). In the three-engine model, power will rise to 850 hp (634 kW / 862 hp), enough to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds. For this version Rivian talks about an estimated autonomy of 380 miles (about 611 km).

At the top of the range we find the version with four electric motors and 1,025 hp (764 kW / 1,039 HP). Acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour takes just 2.5 seconds.

Rivian has also redesigned the battery packs, always available in the Standard, Large and Max versions. Depending on the models, they will allow ranges of up to 420 miles (675 km). The Standard versions can count on a battery with LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) type cells.

The car manufacturer has also revised and improved the package of driver assistance systems which can count on 11 cameras, 5 radars and a hardware platform with greater processing capacity. Thanks to OTA updates, Rivian will continue to improve the functionality of its ADAS systems. Pricing starts at $69,900 for the R1T and $75,900 for the R1S.
