Perugia 2024 elections, how to vote: dates, times and candidates

Perugia administrative elections 2024: everything is ready for the municipal elections which will be merged for the first round of the European elections for a sort of election day.

After two consecutive terms as mayor, the current mayor Andrea Romizi will not be able to run again in these local elections in Perugia, with the center-right having decided to focus on the councilor Margherita Scoccia.

The centre-left candidate will instead be Vittoria Ferdinandi – also supported by the 5 Star Movement -, while the former Perugia midfielder Davide Baiocco will be the candidate of Popular Alternative. Completing the list of aspiring mayors are the former senator Leonardo Caponi for Perugia Against the War e Massimo Monni with Perugia Merita, a list also supported by Italia Viva.

Perugia 2024 administrative elections: dates and times

The Perugia 2024 administrative elections will be held on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June regarding the first round. As mentioned, at the same time we will also vote for the European elections and in Piedmont for the regional elections.

These are the timetables opening and closing of polls for the 2024 local elections.

  • Saturday 8th: from 3pm to 11pm
  • Sunday 9th: from 7am to 11pm

The counting of votes of the first round of the local elections will begin at 2pm on Monday 10th June.

The possible turn of ballot for the local elections it will be held on Sunday 23 June from 7am to 11pm and on Monday 24 June from 7am to 3pm.

How to vote in the local elections in Perugia

For elect the mayor and, at the same time, the town Councilthe voter in the local elections has three voting options:

  • put an X on the symbol of the list, thus also assigning the vote to the candidate for Mayor;
  • put an X only on the name of the aspiring mayor (in this case no vote will be assigned to the list);
  • put an X on the list and write the surname of the councilor candidate you prefer.

In local elections, split voting is permitted: it means that the voter can cross out the name of the mayoral candidate he prefers and also put an X on a list that supports a different candidate.

In municipalities with over 15,000 inhabitants it is also possible to assign the double gender preference: just write the surnames of the two candidates of different sexes belonging to the same list.

The electoral law

There electoral law of local elections in Italy it is majority-based when it comes to the election of the mayor, while the distribution of councilors takes place in a proportional manner.

Being Perugia a municipality with more than 15,000 inhabitants, if no candidate in the first round obtains an absolute majority then a ballot between the two most voted. If there is a perfect head-to-head tie, the oldest candidate will be elected mayor.

To guarantee the formation of a solid majority and consequently substantial governability, the winning mayoral candidate will be added to the lists linked to the candidate awarded 60% of the seats; the remaining seats on the Council will then be assigned to the other lists in a proportional manner through the “D’Hondt method”.

When the seats are divided, the total number of seats will be elected 32 councilors excluding the mayor, all lists and groups of lists of candidates who have passed the threshold will be admitted barrier threshold 3% of valid votes.

The city of Perugia for a long time it was considered a sort of fortress of the left and, during the 2014 local elections, the victory of Andrea Romizi of the centre-right made a lot of noise.

Ten years later, with the current mayor no longer eligible for re-election, the center-right has identified the councilor Margherita Scoccia the ideal candidate who will be supported by nine lists.

The candidate will be in the centre-left Vittoria Ferdinandi: with her there are Pd, 5 Star Movement, Green-Left Alliance, Civici, Pensa Perugia and Demos.

Italia Viva will instead go with Massimo Monni and his Perugia Deserves, while in these municipal elections he will also be on the field Leonardo Caponiformer senator of the Italian Communists.

Popular Alternative of the mayor of Terni Stefano Bandecchi has long announced a striking name for Perugia: the former red and white footballer Davide Baiocco.
