COMMENT ON THE DATA UPDATED TO APRIL 2024

“We have reached the end of the first quarter of 2024 and Lombardy, as often happens, finds itself wearing the black jersey for the number of deaths at work. There were 52 victims at the end of April. But the numbers of deaths, as we know, must be compared to the working population, which in Lombardy is the largest compared to all the other regions. And in fact, when we talk about mortality risk compared to the working population, the result changes and Lombardy is still placed in the yellow zone, with an incidence of fatal accidents lower than the national average”.

Mauro Rossato, President of the Vega Engineering Observatory, thus opens his reflection to describe the emergency in Lombardy in the latest survey developed by his team of experts.

“In fact, in Lombardy there are 7.3 fatal accidents for every million employed, while the Italian average is 8.7. Unfortunately, this positive data is not found in all the provinces of the region: Brescia, Sondrio, Pavia and Mantua present a risk of fatal accidents much higher than the national average, reaching, in the case of Brescia, 18.2 fatal accidents per million people. occupied.”

THE RISK OF DEATH IN LOMBARDY, PROVINCE BY PROVINCE, FROM JANUARY TO APRIL 2024. FROM THE RED ZONE TO THE WHITE ZONE

To identify the most fragile areas of Italy and the region in terms of safety at work, the Mestre Observatory develops a mapping of the risk with respect to the incidence of mortality.

The yellow zone, the one in which Lombardy is located, is the zone which, immediately after the white, groups together the regions with the incidence of mortality at work among the lowest at a national level. And at the end of April 2024, the risk of fatal injury in Lombardy (7.3 deaths per million employed) was lower than the national average of 8.7.

As regards the incidences, in detail, in the region it turns out that Brescia, Sondrio, Pavia and Mantua are in the “red zone” with an incidence of 18.2, 13.4, 12.7 and 11.0 respectively . They are followed in the orange zone by Monza and Brianza (9.9) and in the white zone by most of the Lombardy provinces with mortality risks well below the regional and national average, starting with Cremona (6.5), Varese ( 5.1), Milan (4.6), Bergamo (4.1) and Como (3.8).

TOTAL INJURIES (FATAL AND OTHER) IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2024 IN LOMBARDY

There were 52 deaths from January to April 2024 (compared to 49 in 2023): 33 were detected at work (9 less than last year) and 19 those in progress (12 more than 2023). And it is always sadly first in Italy both for the number of total victims and for deaths at work.

The highest number of total deaths occurred in the province of Brescia (13). They are followed by: Milan with 12 deaths, Bergamo and Pavia (5), Varese and Monza Brianza (4), Mantua (3), Cremona and Lodi (2), Como and Sondrio (1). Lecco recorded no victims.

And Brescia is also at the top of the ranking when fatal accidents at work are analysed, with 10 victims. They are followed by: Milan (7), Monza and Brianza (4), Pavia (3), Bergamo, Mantua and Varese (2), Como, Cremona and Sondrio (1). There were no casualties at work in the provinces of Lecco and Lodi.

There are 37,796 accident reports in total out of a total, in Italy, of 193,979. That is to say 19.5% of those detected in Italy.

AT THE END OF APRIL AN INCREASE IN TOTAL INJURY REPORTS WAS NOTED

At the end of April 2024, total injury reports grew by 4.4% compared to the end of April 2023: they were 36,200 and are now 37,796.

MANUFACTURING IS THE MOST AFFECTED SECTOR IN LOMBARDY

Manufacturing Activities, even at the end of April 2024, are still at the top of the ranking of accident reports at work (5,079). They are followed by: Transportation and Warehousing (2,066), Commerce (1,834), Healthcare (1,792) and Construction (1,702).

IT IS MILAN THAT HAS THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF TOTAL COMPLAINTS

The province of Milan is the one with the highest number of total accident reports (12,671), followed by: Brescia (5,309), Bergamo (4,448), Varese (3,400), Monza Brianza (2,606), Como (1,777), Mantua ( 1,669), Pavia (1,639), Cremona (1,558), Lecco (1,211), Lodi (773) and Sondrio (735).

INJURIES BY GENDER, NATIONALITY AND AGE: HERE ARE THE STATISTICS

Finally, there were 13,920 accident reports from working women (11,095 at work) and 23,876 from men (20,815 at work). Two women lost their lives while working.

Complaints from foreign workers are 9,006 out of 37,796 (almost 25%). And there are 7,512 complaints from foreign workers registered during work.

There are 13 foreign workers who died in the first quarter of 2024 while working. Almost 40% of the region’s victims.

The age group most affected by fatal accidents at work is between 55 and 64 years old (13 victims), or almost 40% of the total.

WHAT IS THE INCIDENCE OF INJURIES?

The incidence of fatal accidents indicates the number of workers who died while working in a given area (region or province) for every million employed people present in the same area. This index allows us to compare the accident phenomenon between different regions, even though they are characterized by a different working population.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE ZONATION CREATED BY THE VEGA SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT OBSERVATORY?

The zoning used by the Vega Engineering Safety and Environment Observatory depicts the accident risk in the Italian regions according to the following color scale:

White: regions with an accident incidence lower than 75% of the national average incidence.

Yellow: regions with an accident incidence between 75% of the national average incidence and the national average value.

Orange: regions with an accident incidence between the national average value and 125% of the national average incidence.

Red: regions with an accident incidence higher than 125% of the national average incidence.
