dies after removal of a stent, sentences sought for nine doctors

Acquittals and convictions requested yesterday in court in Sassari by prosecutor Paolo Piras in the trial for manslaughter paid by nine doctors. The story originated in March 2018 in Sassari when the 73-year-old from Sassari, Carlo Dessole, is hospitalized due to the loosening of a stent. The doctors schedule surgery for the following week but on the evening of March 11, the pensioner’s condition worsened due to an aneurysm and, once he left the operating table, the 73-year-old lost his life.

According to the prosecutor the intervention would have occurred too late because it was decided to do some tests, such as the CT scan, which, given the situation, could have been avoided. So much so that Dessole, according to civil party lawyers Mario Pittalis and Andrea Russo, he arrived on the operating table “practically already dead”.

The magistrate then separates the responsibilities of the doctors and divides the sequence of what happened into the first and second phases, i.e. those relating to the hospitalization phase and the series of events connected to the last day of the man’s life. And he asks for acquittal for Salvatora Dettori, Pierluigi Tilocca and Gianfranco Fadda and the sentenceat the minimum sentence, for Eugenio Martelli, Franco Piredda, Maria Antonietta Casu, Anastasia Gabriella Tucconi, Roberto Mancino and Sandro Ciccarello. A request that takes into account, says the prosecutor, the difficult situation that doctors experience every day.

The civil defenders, representing Dessole’s widow and son, presented request for compensation for an amount that was not disclosed. The defense lawyers of the accused are Sebastiano Chironi, Francesco Porcu, Ivano Iai, Filippo Orecchioni, Guido Datome, Carlo Pinna Parpaglia, Gianluigi Poddighe and Luigi Esposito. Judge Claudia Sechi has ordered, for the next hearing, the discussion of the lawyers representing the doctors for whom acquittal was requested.
