Two illegal landfills seized in Catanzaro

On 300 square meters toxic waste and used tires were found

Two large illegal landfills were seized at the end of an operation by the local police of Catanzaro in the southern area of the city.

In particular, personnel from the environmental police unit, directed by lieutenant colonel Salvatore Tarantino – with the supervision of commander Vincenzo Ruocco and with input from the mayor Nicola Fiorita – intervened in Viale Isonzo and in the Aranceto area, to carry out surveys and checks regarding the hypothesis of crime of illicit waste management and pollution of surface waters and soil.

The landfills were found in uncovered areas on natural terrain, without waterproofing, and exposed to atmospheric agents and rainwater runoff, in the absence of systems for involvement and disposal, and in the vicinity of civilian homes.

In Viale Isonzo, an area of 110 square meters was seized in which approximately 150 cubic meters of dangerous special waste were deposited in an uncontrolled manner, some of which were labeled as harmful and toxic, with the probable presence of asbestos.

In the second area, seized in the Aranceto area, covering approximately 180 square metres, special flammable waste was found near some houses, with a risk of fire, due to the presence of a pile of used tires for almost 150 cubic metres. .

The local police have reported the two alleged violators to the judicial authority and will proceed to arrange for them, subject to ratification by Arpacal, the regulations for the disposal of waste in the areas concerned.

“I must thank the environmental police unit – comments the councilor for safety Marinella Giordano – who worked, with commitment and great sacrifices, for three days in this operation which contributes to highlighting the attention of the Administration in the southern outskirts of the city . We are talking about areas put at risk by the presence of open-air waste piles, much of which is dangerous for the health of residents. With few men and few resources, the local police are doing their utmost to translate, into concrete actions, fundamental objectives such as the protection of the territory, urban decorum and safety which cannot be compromised on”.
