the necessary legal amendment has been filed

LECCE – An amendment to the Consolidated Law on the regulation of local public transport, which dates back to 2002, was deposited in the Regional Council by Alessandro Delli Noci, Loredana Capone, Cristian Casili and Sebastiano Leo. The aim is to allow provincial capitals to plan and organize their own mobility services also in the territory of neighboring municipalities.

“This change to the regional law – explained Delli Noci – intends on the one hand to decongest the capitals, on the other to offer small neighboring municipalities the possibility of using urban public transport services. An organization of urban public transport on an agglomeration scale, if appropriately provided for by regional regulations, as happens in numerous other Italian regions such as Veneto, Sardinia, Abruzzo, Lombardy, Piedmont and many others, could absorb a significant component of commuter traffic, significantly reducing the pressure of car traffic and its undesirable effects on the main city of the urban agglomeration”.

“This bill will finally put an end to the numerous inconveniences experienced by the citizens of Lecce and surrounding areas, offering them an efficient public transport service. Lecce and the neighboring municipalities will thus be able to be connected with the means of the public company SGM, which will expand its area of action and allow students and commuters to easily reach the capital by public transport”, added the president of the regional council. , Loredana Capone.

The opportunity to provide Lecce with a large-area transport service, correcting the existing legislation, was discussed on 20 May at Palazzo Carafa, in a meeting called by the mayor Carlo Salvemini in the presence, among others, of the Ciliento regional councilors ( Transport) and Delli Noci (Economic Development).

“Our cities have changed and the organization of local public transport must also take into account the transformations of recent years – comments Cristian Casili -. It is the institutions’ task not only to talk about sustainable mobility, but to encourage it, so that no one has to be forced to take their own car to get to the centre. The public transport network must be interconnected, only in this way will we be able to make housing development and mobility go hand in hand. In other regions this has already been done and work is underway to ensure that transport functions consistently with the new urban agglomerations”.

“In line with the ecological transition to which we are called – declared Sebastiano Leo – we try to expand the offer of sustainable mobility as much as possible. This is the first objective. Consequently we cater to commuters who move from small towns to capitals for work and study reasons and at the same time we do not forget to offer greater services to tourists who decide to spend sustainable holidays. This change represents a far-sighted step towards a more ecological and modern society.”
