Digitalization of businesses, Umbria’s leap forward

NewTuscia – PERUGIA/TERNI – The analysis of the Study Center of the Guglielmo Tagliacarne Chambers of Commerce, the fulcrum of the economic information of the Chamber system, in the “Barometer of the territorial economy”. Six indicators taken into consideration, out of two (average level of digitalisation of companiesese and average level of digital maturity of people) both the provinces of Perugia and Terni exceed the Italian figure, while in the other four they are below. The strong commitment of the Umbria Chamber of Commerce, which has pushed and continues to push hard on the digitalisation of businesses and on the ecological transition of the regional economic system and which is achieving important successes with the Punto Impresa Digitale (Pid).

The declaration

Giorgio Mencaroni, President of the Umbria Chamber of Commerce: “The data from the Tagliacarne Institute on the digitalisation of Umbrian businesses are comforting, highlighting a consistent improvement which rewards the effort being spent on the digitalisation and ecological transition of the regional economy. However, some things should not be overlooked. The first is the territorial gap, on the topic of business digitalisation, between the provinces of Perugia and that of Terni, a topic that needs to be explored in greater depth to better target policies aimed at overcoming this gap. And then there is the fact that, out of six indicators that the Tagliacarne Institute uses to evaluate the digitalisation of businesses, Umbria is below the Italian average in four (and so are both provinces). This is to say that a lot has been done, but there is still more to do. In short, no one can relax on these issues on which the future well-being of Umbria is at stake. As always, the Chamber of Commerce is at the forefront of this effort“.

Umbria’s leap forward in terms of the digitalisation of businesses (but also in the average level of digital maturity of people), with the clear improvement being much stronger in the province of Perugia than in that of Terni.

This is noted by Il Study Center of the Guglielmo Tagliacarne Chambers of Commercethe hub of economic information of the Chamber of Commerce system, in the “Barometer of the territorial economy“, which on the digitalisation of companies takes into consideration six key parameters (Umbria is above the national average in two indicators, while it is below in four).

Digitalization of businesses

In the provincial ranking of the average level of digitalisation of companies according to the SELF i4.0 survey, the province of Perugia goes from 60th place (out of 107) in 2022 to 14th in 2023, with a score of 2.55 on the scale between 0 and 4. Improvement also in province of Terni, although less marked. The province of Terni, which in 2022 was in the bottom of the provincial ranking of the average level of digitalisation of businesses, placing 96th out of 107, in 2023 moved to 74th position (the SELF i4.o survey assigns Ternano a score of 2.14 on a scale of 0 to 4).

Results that reward the commitment to the digitalisation of businesses e which for the first time lead the province of Perugia to exceed the national average (that of Terni, however, although improving, still remains well below the national average). With Perugino’s push, Umbria is also above the Italian average for the first time.

Digital maturity of people, both the provinces of Perugia and Terni exceed the Italian average

The province of Perugia is also in a good position with regards to the average level of digital maturity of people, placing itself in 27th place in the provincial ranking in 2023 (score 0.61 on the scale from 0 to 1), above the national average. The province of Terni comes in 27th place (average score 0.61), also exceeding the national average.

The other four indicators, both the province of Perugia and even more so that of Terni, are below the national average

The province of Perugia is in 72nd place, and that of Terni in 101st out of 107 Italian provinces, therefore at the bottom of the ranking, in this regard to the percentage share of earnings of workers who are required to have the ability to use mathematical and IT languages and methodswhile Perugino is in 55th position, and Terni in 81st, in terms of percentage share of earnings of workers who are asked for the ability to use digital skills.

Umbria certainly doesn’t shine in the percentage share of earnings of workers who are asked to have the ability to apply “4.0” technologies to innovate processes (Perugino is in 78th place, Ternano in 91st) and in “Relevance Digital Skills Index” of workers’ earnings.
