Lufthansa flight from Munich to Lamezia-Terme, engine problems

The plane diverts to Rome Fiumicino. Flight LH-1902 had to raise the white flag an hour after takeoff

On Saturday 1 June, Lufthansa flight LH-1902 from Munich (Germany) to Lamezia-Terme (Italy), about an hour after take-off, had to divert route FL350 about 100 miles east of Rome. The turn, Flightradar24 shows, occurred in the skies above Molise.

The reason for the maneuver concerns a technical problem: “The cockpit crew noticed irregularities in the engine and decided to divert to Rome Fiumicino as a precaution, due to a suspected bleed air leak on the right engine (V2533),” confirmed the Lufthansa spokesperson.

The plane, an Airbus A321-200, registered D-AISD, landed without incident on runway 16L of Rome Fiumicino airport, approximately 25 minutes later. The aircraft was welcomed by two fire trucks and the emergency services who “intercepted” it directly on the runway. A passenger reported that the captain announced that he had a technical problem on engine No. 2, they suspected a leak in the duct that carried hot air from the engine to the air conditioning system, but the engine still worked normally.

Due to the lack of maintenance at Lamezia, Dispatch and Maintenance had decided to divert the aircraft to Rome where such maintenance was readily available. After landing technicians checked the engine, the captain later announced that a sensor was faulty and that they could continue the flight. The plane, notes Giovanni D’Agata, president of the “Rights Desk”, left Rome after approximately 2:20 hours and reached Lamezia with a delay of approximately 3:10 hours.
