Civitavecchia Port – Study on the economic impact of cruises underway

CLIA, the International Association of Companies, commissioned Oxford Economics to carry out a survey which will be carried out in partnership with the Rome Cruise Terminal and the ITE “Guido Baccelli”

CIVITAVECCHIA – A study on the economic impact of cruises has begun in Italy’s first cruise port. CLIA, an international association which brings together 95% of the world’s companies, has in fact commissioned Oxford Economics to carry out an analysis on how the activities and flows of cruise tourism impact the economy and territory of Civitavecchia.

In the field, the investigation will be supervised by the Roma Cruise Terminal and carried out operationally by the students of the “Guido Baccelli” Technical Economic Institute. The kids, led by Dr. Cristina Carapellese and Professor Mauro Adamo, will submit a large number of questionnaires until next October to get concrete, first-hand answers.

“The companies have always worked in close contact with the destinations where the ships call with the aim of ensuring planned and sustainable tourism flows and, above all, enhancing the economic benefits of cruise activity for coastal communities.

Therefore, the study on the economic impact of cruises, with first-hand information from passengers, crew, but also from businesses and tour operators in port cities, is absolutely important for us to understand how our activities impact the local economy ” says Marie-Caroline Laurent, Director General CLIA Europe.

“Cruise tourism is evolving with alternative itineraries and a diversified offer, so it is also useful to know in detail how the different territories welcome and interpret the phenomenon”.

According to John Portelli, the General Manager of Roma Cruise Terminal: “Our company is very pleased that CLIA has selected Civitavecchia for this investigation.

Over the years, thanks to the collaboration with the ITE Guido Baccelli Institute, we have managed to carry out studies on the positive impact that the presence of cruise passengers and crews is having in our city. The results of the 2024 survey confirm the results of the three previous studies, one of which was commissioned by the Port Authority.

Roma Cruise Terminal is proud of the fact that the growing number of cruise passengers and in particular of passengers and crew in turnaround, is supporting the development of a new economy based on the cruise sector”.

Civitavecchia, therefore, is once again at the center of attention thanks to the cruise movement. In 2023, the Rome Cruise Terminal reached a historic total of 3,300,000 passengers with important economic impacts on Civitavecchia, Lazio and the surrounding regions.

According to Professor Mauro Adamo (ITE Guido Baccelli), “the survey is an exciting and unique experience for the students of the “Baccelli” who thus have the opportunity to improve the English learned at school by approaching the thousands of cruise passengers who disembark every day at Terminal Vespucci to administer the questionnaire. Students also have the extraordinary opportunity to collaborate with two prestigious organizations of international importance such as Oxford Economics, one of the most important economic and business consultancy firms in the world, and CLIA”.
