The Piacenza mountaineer Luca Bernini, a 35-year-old instructor of the CAI of Piacenza who tragically died on the morning of Tuesday 4 June on the Swiss side, fell hundreds of meters down the east face of the Matterhorn. According to what the Sion cantonal police reported to the Ansa agency, the man from Piacenza was with a climbing partner: «Around 8, after reaching an altitude of around 4,050 metres, the two put on their skis and started the descent. During this phase, for reasons that the investigations will have to ascertain, one of them lost his balance and fell several hundred meters. His climbing partner immediately alerted the emergency services who, having arrived promptly on site, were only able to confirm the skier’s death.” The Public Prosecutor’s Office, in collaboration with the cantonal police, has opened an investigation.
«He was an expert connoisseur of the mountains – reports Antonio Vaccari, member of the CAI board of directors, to the Corriere di Bologna – For many years he had attended the CAI of Piacenza where he had completed the entire journey to become a mountaineering school instructor. In addition to climbing, he had always demonstrated great skills on snow and ice, including climbing waterfalls. He was a cautious boy, we still don’t know what exactly happened.”
