Tenuta Casali’s Sangiovese liqueur was born from grandmother Mentana’s recipe

An elegant soul of violet and cherry, distinctive traits of the vine, embellished with a delicious aftertaste of cocoa and an enveloping finish: this is how it looks Holythe Sangiovese liqueur from Casali estate revealed in preview to Romagna restaurant operators during an open-door afternoon reserved for them between the vineyard and cellar. Between visits to the rows and tastings of the latest vintages of the top wines, on Monday 3 June the Mercato Saraceno winery dedicated a special moment to the tasting of a new product strongly linked to the territory and the family history, which stands at the same time as a bridge between history and the future.

“In the last century our grandmother Mentana, who ran the osteria of the same name in the town square, used to prepare a Sangiovese liqueur that was much appreciated by the restaurant’s patrons” said Silvia, Daniele and Francesco Casali, third generation of winemakers. “It was an artisanal production, which he prepared by combining wine, grappa, coffee grapes, chilli pepper and wildflower honey. For some inhabitants of Mercato it represented a daily event, but there were also those who, passing through, stopped specifically at the tavern to taste that famous elixir”.

Starting from grandmother Mentana’s secret recipe, inspired by an ancient preparation of monastic origin, and updating it through studies and collaboration with Alessandro Fanelli, owner of Officine del Sale and Bandito Spirits, Tenuta Casali has created a contemporary liqueur with an intense bouquet and harmonious, capable of combining complexity and pleasantness. Excellent as an aperitif due to its fragrance and low alcohol content, it can also be enjoyed as a pleasant after dinner alone or in combination with sweets and dry biscuits. “The liqueur is part of the Italian tradition and of our innate tendency towards conviviality” explained the young people of Tenuta Casali during the presentation. “It invites us to stop, to take a moment to be together and listen to each other without rushing. This is why we wanted to make a liqueur that speaks of our territory, of our past but also of that simple taste of coming together that we have rediscovered in these last somewhat turbulent years and which we are called to treasure for the future as well”.
