Below is the note from city councilor Franco Natilla, who denounces the problems of hygiene and urban decorum due to the unauthorized display of fruit, vegetables and even fish.
«Food products arbitrarily displayed in a beautiful and often ugly display outside the shops: a bad practice that must stop in Bitonto. In stigmatizing the terrible habit of many shopkeepers, I called for immediate public initiatives to protect urban decorum in a complaint addressed in my capacity as municipal councilor to the mayor, the general secretary of the Municipality, the commander of the local police and the president of the council municipality of Bitonto. At the same time, I informed the prefect of Bari of the problem.
The facts are not new and are evident to every fellow citizen on a daily basis. Since November 2022, the Control and Guarantee council commission has brought to the attention of the municipal leaders a deplorable practice that is very widespread in the city, in contempt of any existing rules: thedisplay of foodstuffs – then intended for human consumption – outside premises used as commercial establishments.
It’s about a conduct that conflicts with due food hygiene and poses potential dangers to the health of consumers, if we consider the poor state of preservation of food, especially fruit and vegetables, abandoned to polluting substances. It also constitutes cases of obvious illegal occupation of public landSince no tax has been paid to the Municipality, as the operators are not even authorizedhowever.
Another undeniable inconvenience is caused bydaily display outside a well-known fish shop of polystyrene containers soaked in putrid water which stinks up the whole area. The facing part is illegally circumscribed by large vases that prevent vehicular parking… Not to mention the traffic jams caused by cars in double and triple rows. Even in this case, what does the person who should supervise on a daily basis do?
Not to mention theclutter on pavements and areas reserved for paid parking by trolleys for separate waste collection as well as from improvised stalls.
Further degradation, always in defiance of the rules, is caused by rampant illegal activity in the city: stalls of fruit and vegetable sellers, without authorization, who stop at every street corner and even close to roundabouts, even more dangerously. All this happens, unfortunately, also due to an often deaf and blind vigilance in the face of this authentic massacre.
The time has come to say enough to this shame!
I have asked for some time to intervene with the utmost urgency and I have proposed, regarding the second problem, to revitalize the local markets, allocating spaces, subject to authorization, to sellers who are entitled to them and request them”.
