Cavour barrier, new life for the Ponente building: there will be a pharmacy

The rooms inside the Porta Barriera Cavour (via Gaspare Finali side) will soon be affected by restoration and conservative rehabilitation works, the project of which has been authorized by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape and approved this morning, with a specific resolution, by the Municipal Council . The building intervention will be aimed at adapting the internal rooms to accommodate – for the next six years (renewable for a further six) – a pharmacy and a small health service centre. As part of the plan to enhance the municipal heritage implemented over the last few years, the municipal administration of Cesena, through a public tender, in November 2022 auctioned the Ponente della Porta city building which accompanies the people of Cesena from the city center and visitors towards Corso Cavour and the railway station, in order to guarantee these historic and valuable spaces a new life.

As part of this same procedure, the company “Farmacia del Corso srl” with headquarters in Casalecchio di Reno (Bo) was selected, which proposed building a pharmacy within the premises of the Barriera Ponente. Therefore, with the aim of making these premises usable, the current concessionaire has presented a project regarding the implementation of works to adapt the premises to the proposed pharmacy function.

A new service for the community. The real estate units subject to the intervention, entirely paid for by the concessionaire, who invests a total of approximately 150 thousand euros, are located on the ground and first floors of the building. The pharmacy and a technical room will be set up on the ground floor, while the first floor will be used for services related to the health sector and administrative offices. In this regard, the proposed works will contribute to making the premises covered by the concession accessible to the public also through structural works to adapt to the reference legislation regarding the removal of architectural barriers, so as to guarantee disabled people to be able to use the pharmaceutical service without no difficulty.

The Barrier is one of the symbolic places of Cesena, as well as one of the main accesses to the city. This property separates the historic center from Viale Carducci, Via Gaspare Finali and Corso Cavour, and accompanies Cesena residents along Corso Sozzi, to the Duomo and to the other main squares in the centre. Starting from this strategic location and considering the excellent results recorded by the premises of the Levante building, which currently house two commercial activities, the municipal administration wanted to enhance the Barriera di Ponente by auctioning the internal premises. In this way, also thanks to the accepted management proposal, the people of Cesena will be able to fully enjoy this public place again, which has always been at the center of the history of our city.

Consisting of two neoclassical pavilions built in 1864 to replace the Malatesta Porta Cervese, the Cavour Barrier has always been at the center of the city’s social and public life. Designed with the aim of offering a beautiful image of Cesena to travelers arriving in the city from the nearby station and owned by the Municipality, the complex was declared of historical interest in 2008 by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. Precisely with a view to continuous valorisation, and for a more effective management of services and activities for the benefit of the city community, the municipal administration has assigned the Ponente building (Via Gaspare Finali side) through an open public tender procedure.
