the sacristy of the Chapel of San Niccolò of the ancient Pharmacy of Santa Maria Novella – Michelangelo Buonarroti is back

Florence is a city of countless surprises and you never stop discovering. Inside theAncient Pharmacy of Santa Maria Novellaone of the oldest in the world founded in 1221what once was is present the completely frescoed sacristy of the Chapel of San Niccolò.

What is now the sales hall was once a chapel and was transformed into a place for exchanging perfumery and pharmaceutical products at the behest of Damiano Beni following a renovation project imagined by Fra’ Tommaso Valori.

The works began in 1847 and it was decided to have it decorated the typically Gothic vault with frescoes by Paolino Sarti that had the four continents as their theme. The wooden furnishings were designed to reflect the fourteenth-century style.

Adjacent to the large living room the small but evocative frescoed Sacristy remainsas it was originally when Mariotto di Nardo di Cione painted it between 1385 and 1408.

On the walls we can see scenes from the Passion of Christ, commissioned by the Acciaiuoli family.

If you look carefully, a lion is clearly visible in the lunette of the Crucifixionheraldic symbol of the client family while the cardinal’s hat alludes to Angelo Acciaiuoli depicted at the foot of the Cross, Florentine bishop of the client family, later ordained cardinal in 1387.

The Chapel is also known by the name of the Water Room. In fact, starting from 1612 it was the place used to store distilled waters in glass ampoules or copper containers for sale in bulk.

The pictorial cycle it was recently restored by restorer Daniela Dini together with her collaborators. Consider that the paintings on the vault had been completely covered during a nineteenth-century intervention. A real madness.

If you go to Florence don’t forget to visit theAncient Pharmaceutical Perfume Workshop Santa Maria Novella and its sacristy, at number 16 via della Scala.
