The story of the plane acquired by the Italian Air Force in 1956 and placed a few days ago in the center of the roundabout which leads from Via Foggia to the city center could end up among the items on the agenda of one of the next city council meetings.
The decision of the administration led by mayor Cosimo Cannito, in fact, is generating numerous controversies on the political front. The mayor’s words were not enough to calm things down. Cannito had specified that that plane represents “a symbol of peace, used for humanitarian aid with the aim of maintaining international peace and rebuilding the nation”. An explanation that has not convinced the opposition who want to see clearly. The exponents of the Democratic Party are pointing the finger and have asked for an in-depth analysis of the costs and the decision itself.
«Already in recent months we had pointed out that that simulacrum had been abandoned for years in a depot dedicated to waste without any respect for the Air Force – says the group leader of the Democratic Party Rosa Cascella – while today we ask ourselves how the location was arrived at and why right there, with strong doubts about the need to do so and about safety.”
The proposals of Italia Viva add to the doubts of the demos. «It would be much more significant – says the city president Nunzia Stella Dell’Aere – to provide for the installation of a statue dedicated to Leontine De Nittis, because it is only thanks to his donation that we can enjoy the pictorial works of our Giuseppe De at Palazzo della Marra Nittis, an artist who made Barletta known throughout the world.”
But the affair did not just unleash a political storm. In fact, not even the residents of the area appreciated the installation of the aircraft a few steps from their homes and in the next few days they will ask for a meeting at Palazzo di Città.
