Water emergency, between Agrigento and Sciacca

The prefect of Agrigento is working on some buffer remedies for the water emergency. The strike of private tankers continues in Sciacca. Tomorrow evening Extraordinary city council meeting.

The Prefect of Agrigento is committed, among other things, to requisitioning private wells, if legally possible in the face of the water emergency. Filippo Romano from Udine underlines: “I am trying to do everything in my power, including the adoption of measures aimed at the requisition of private wells to be made available to the community.” And he adds: “I have also asked the Sicilian Region to authorize industrial activities, where possible, to reuse their processing water, diverting the drinking water intended for them to families.” In the meantime, not only Agrigento is gripped by the grip of thirst. Even the second municipality in the province by number of inhabitants, namely Sciacca, is in the vortex of the crisis despite the fact that, unlike the city of the Temples, it has regularly active springs. In fact, part of its water (assuming a principle of solidarity) has been diverted to other thirstier municipalities. And therefore for a week in Sciacca the private companies supplying water with tankers have been on strike, complaining about the reduction in availability of water from the tank in Sovareto intended for them. The stop to the tanker replacement service aggravates the gap between residential buildings, which although with difficulty accumulate the water necessary for their needs, and other buildings (including hotels, residences, bars and restaurants) which instead are unable to fill the tanks . Tomorrow evening Wednesday in Sciacca it will be discussed during an extraordinary session of the city council. Mayor Fabio Termine was asked for a civil protection provision for the activation of an emergency service through urgent supplies of water to alleviate the inconveniences of the population and economic activities.
