«He said of me that I am a visionary mayor. And today I want to say that he was the true visionary, expressing great gratitude to him for what he did in the world.” With these words of admiration and gratitude, the mayor of Pescara, Carlo Masci, sadly announced and commented on the passing of Remo Saraceni, inventor of the Big Piano admired in the 80s in the film “Big” with Tom Hanks and installed a year and a half ago in Piazza Salotto thanks to a donation from the artist himself, a work also created thanks to the commitment and collaboration of some local businesses.

Saraceni, originally from Pescara, passed away at the age of 89 in his native Philadelphia, in the United States. Mayor Masci, who had the opportunity to meet him exactly five years ago, defined him as “a brilliant artist”: on this occasion Saraceni announced his willingness to donate his work to Pescara. But before discovering his artistic streak, Remo Saraceni was a genius in much more significant fields as evidenced by his role as an engineer at NASA. «He worked on archaeological excavations, manufactured innovative radios and record players, designed audiovisual equipment, studied air pollution in Milan and was a shoe designer and industrial developer in his father’s company. He also worked for a company that developed rocket modules for space projects » said Masci, finally citing the prestigious “ Lighting design award ” from the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America that Saraceni deserved in 1979.
