the port on the podium of the most popular

Younger cruise passengers. And with more spending power. And then, summer 2024 it will be dedicated to new cruise passengers: two out of three of those who have booked the holiday will be on a ship for the first time. The Ticketcrociere Observatory also highlights that among the favorite ports for embarkation, Naples confirms itself on the podium. But let’s go in order.

The news

The first data concerns age. The cruise passengers, on average, for 2024 are under 40 years old. A figure that goes completely against the trend, confirming the outdated image that elderly people wanted on cruise ships. And the data becomes even more interesting in Naples where the average age of those leaving from the Angioino pier drops to 36 years. As mentioned, two thirds of the total subject to the considerations of the Ticketcrociere Observatory – whose findings are particularly reliable as they were carried out on the entire reservation pool of the first Italian online cruise ticketing operator – will take a cruise holiday for the first time (66%), while the remaining share is represented by ship regulars, the so-called repeaters (34%). The general data also says that almost half of cruise passengers travel as a couple and more than 80% have chosen itineraries in the Mediterranean and Greek islands. «Couples are now over it families represent 49% of travelers this summer, compared to the 45% who come on board with children in tow – says Nicola Lorusso, CEO of Taoticket, the company that promotes the Observatory -. 3% sail in groups and the remaining 3% is made up of the niche of single tourists, who today have dedicated programs, activities and offers on board most ships.” In Naples this figure is denoted by 0% of singles, while families rise to 52% and couples to 45%. 3%, however, goes to groups.

Shopping

«Cruise passengers, experts and otherwise, in the summer of 2024 – explains the observatory – will spend on average 1,205 euros each, almost 100 euros more than 1,107 in summer 2023. An increase that began in 2022, with 925 euros, when the trend that had contracted the 2021 expenditure to 816 euros was reversed, still with the aftermath of Covid. For comparison, the average pre-pandemic spending per capita amounted to 935 euros in 2019. The quality of the accommodation on board affects the spending: 40% of travelers preferred cabins with balconies, more expensive than internal ones (which include another 40% of options) ; no balcony, but a view of the sea with external rooms with a porthole for 16%. Finally, a share of 4% corresponds to the choice of greater comfort with suites (on each ship there are areas or decks dedicated to those who want to live an exclusive experience on board). The segment is still residual for the Italian market luxury: concerns the 1% of bookings, on small ships, which host a few hundred people, with high quality services and a dedicated butler, for individual rates even at four figures”. Among the passengers who they embark in Naples 48% choose internal cabins; the balcony is chosen by 43% while 9% opt for external cabins in general. The average price per passenger in Naples stands at 1,057 euros.

The destinations

As far as destinations go, the Mediterranean conquers 83% of cruise passengers (of this slice, 17% choose the Greek islands). 12% moves towards the cooler air of northern Europe (with 9% of travelers booking itineraries that sail along the Norwegian fjords). With the summer season, the preference for routes in the Caribbean Sea decreases, stopping at 1%. The remaining 4% of the cake opts for cruise itineraries in other areas of the world. The Observatory he also explains that the number of Italians who prefer Italy for the summer on a cruise is increasing, also favored by the number of embarkation ports along the coasts of the peninsula which allow travel times to be reduced. The port/city that will welcome the most cruise passengers from June to September is Genoa (20%), followed by Civitavecchia (16%), Naples (8%), Bari and Venice at 7%. After the all-Italian Top 5, the ranking of the top 10 homeports is completed with the German port of Hamburg with 5% like that of Palermo; 4% for Savona and Kiel (Germany) and 3% for Copenhagen (Denmark). Neapolitans choose the Mediterranean 67%, the Greek Islands 43%. The favorite ships departing from Naples are MSC World Europa 67% and MSC Divina 43%.
