AVEZZANO. Dangerous intersections in the city. The alarm, closely linked to the many accidents in the critical sections, required institutional initiative to secure the risk areas. The Municipality announces interventions worth almost 500 thousand euros. They will be destined for the intersection towards Luco dei Marsi in the industrial area of the city and at the new roundabout in via Brunelleschi.
DANGEROUS INTERSECTIONS
Under the lens is the intersection in the southern area of Avezzano towards Luco dei Marsi, where the SP 22, via Nobel and the Circonfucense converge. Stretch with a high concentration of collisions and, probably, the most important road vulnerability in the area. Then there is the alarm linked to the intersection between via XX Settembre and via dei Fiori, currently regulated by the presence of traffic lights, for which the Region had already allocated 100 thousand in 2022 for the construction of a roundabout «which however is not feasible, there are no spaces and conditions for the work”, explained the traffic councilor of the Municipality of Avezzano, Emilio Cipollone». Finally, the roundabout near the Conad, still in via XX Settembre, recently renovated after being destroyed by a car and again hit directly by a car a few days after the works were returned.
THE INTERVENTIONS
«Works to be completed soon». This was announced by councilor Cipollone in reference to two different safety-related construction sites. «The last meeting with Arap and the Province was held fifteen days ago, in which the project for the intersection in the industrial area was discussed. The table ended with a three-way agreement. We are preparing the latest procedures for sending the formal request for financing. The works will require expenditure of approximately 280,000 euros (divided between the Region and the Province). Within about ten days we will have the final project. The intersection will have to function as a large roundabout, with a traffic island at the entrances to each of the roads that join it. In reference to the critical situation at the traffic lights in via XX Settembre, as it is not possible to intervene on the intersection, the Municipality intends to act on slowing down the speed of vehicles coming from San Pelino through the construction of a roundabout, half at the expense of the municipal coffers . The roundabout will significantly slow down traffic right at the intersection”, explained Cipollone.
RESPECT FOR THE ROAD CODE
The situation is different for the roundabout near Conad. «Since it is a stretch with a high traffic intensity, it is not possible to intervene with bollards. It is a well-lit structure, a site of accidents due to high speed and failure to comply with traffic regulations. This does not mean that we will pay attention to the stretch in question, but prudent behavior on the part of motorists is necessary”, concluded Cipollone.
