“Having a house in Florence today has become a luxury even for those who have a job: the homes available are few, expensive, and to obtain them economic guarantees are required which are difficult to obtain. This is why we need a community pact that unites private individuals, institutions, bodies and associations to find solutions to match supply and demand, to make empty or vacant homes available to find social housing solutions.” Thus Vincenzo Lucchetti, president of the Caritas Solidarity Foundation of Florence, comments on the presentation of the decalogue for the right to live, fair, sustainable and supportive of the Alliance for Living, signed today in Florence. Director Ginevra Chieffi was present for the Caritas Foundation.
“We are convinced that initiatives like this Alliance – said Lucchetti – can make a contribution to addressing the housing emergency in our city”.
“As Caritas of Florence, together with the Italian Caritas and the Caritas Solidarity Foundation of Florence, we participated in the Social Housing initiative as part of the Housing Net project, financed with 8×1000 funds from the Italian Episcopal Conference, to help those looking for a house and having difficulty finding it, turning to owners with vacant apartments – commented Riccardo Bonechi, director of diocesan Caritas -. With great efforts we found about ten apartments where families who came from our facilities went to live, through the advance payment of 12 months’ rent to the owner. Then we wanted to continue by making families walk on their own two feet. But in Florence the problem of very high rents remains. We are also working on a project for off-site students, who find rooms, when they find them, at frighteningly high prices, to achieve controlled rents.”
