From illegal immigrant to Italian citizen. It’s Hamid’s tale. A 34-year-old Afghan migrant who arrived in Calabria in 2019 clandestinely via the infamous Balkan route today, accompanied by his wife and little daughter, signed the documents in front of the mayor of Taurianova Roy Biasi which follow the decree granting Italian citizenship issued by president Sergio Mattarella, in April 2023.

Hamid Azizy, young pizza chefhad arrived in the town of Piana di Gioia Tauro in August 2022, fresh from several transfers around Italy – Milan and Alessandria among his stops – opportunities which also earned him continuous training which today has favored his employment in a local from Taurianova.

Hamid Azizy, speaking with Mayor Biasi, he recalled the initial help received from the Goel Consortium, the cooperative system which for years has also promoted projects aimed at integration, which, after his landing on the Ionian coast of Reggio, had included him in a reception plan in the Municipality of Stignano.

A double redemption, therefore, for the new Italian citizen who, having escaped from the hell of his country, not only saved himself after crossing the Mediterranean but also believed in the possibilities offered by Italy to the point of becoming a full citizen .

“I learned of a fortunate and exemplary story that filled me with emotion – said Mayor Biasi – because it is right to point out how, from a painful experience which, unfortunately, unites thousands of foreign citizens, a dream can be realized thanks to work and the values of hospitality that have always distinguished our country.

The umpteenth oath of loyalty to the laws of the State that was pronounced in front of me, in this case, represents the happy seal for an entire very young family unit, which has a lot to pass on to us because it shows us that our city knows how to be chosen and appreciated , because it ensures a free and dignified future for those who, regardless of nationality, seek it.”
