Cagliari, war on illegal fishing: huge fine for a trawler

On the evening of May 30, the Cagliari Coast Guard coordinated an air-naval surveillance operation aimed at preventing and repressing fishing activity in prohibited areas in the Gulf of Cagliari.

The activity, conducted with the helicopter of the Helicopter Section of the Decimomannu Coast Guard and the CP577 patrol boat of the Port Authority of Cagliari, was aimed at verifying compliance with the regulations on fishing throughout the Gulf of Cagliari from the Marine Protected Area from Capo Carbonara to Capo Teulada.

As part of the operation, which took place after sunset, the helicopter flew over and monitored the gulf thanks to the infrared system supplied, reporting the information to the operations room, while the patrol boat carried out its controls, ready to intervene where necessary.

And around 11pm the patrol boat identified a trawler intent on trawling in a non-permitted area: distance from the coast less than 3 miles on a seabed less than 50 metres. Having reached the fishing vessel, the Coast Guard soldiers subjected it to inspection and proceeded to interrupt the fishing activity, escorting the fishing vessel to the port to impose on the commander of the same a fine of between 1000 and 6000 euros (2000 if under conciliation regime ).

The commander of the fishing vessel was also inflicted with 2 further fines of a further 400 euros in total for violation of the manning table (number of crew members on board) and for irregular boarding of personnel. Furthermore, points were attributed to the captain and the shipping company on the license which, in the event of further sanctions being imposed, could lead to suspension.

Finally, the fishing equipment was seized as required by current legislation.
