Rain, hail and waterspouts for June 2nd – Last minute

It’s been years since we remembered a parade in the streets of the Fori Imperiali with the rain: the bad weather has hit many areas of Italy in recent days and has not spared the celebration of June 2nd, in particular Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and Puglia, with thunderstorms, waterspouts and hailstorms. Waiting for the heat and a first real taste of summer to arrive, according to the forecast, from the middle of next week.

In particular, a strong storm suddenly hit Pisa in the afternoon and significantly slowed down the airport’s operations, causing flooding and inconvenience even inside the terminal in the shopping mall.

Five arriving flights were diverted to other airports while some departures were delayed by a couple of hours.

Some videos on the web showed heavy water leaks into the tunnel coming from the roof. It rained in the city although with less intensity. Flooding and water stagnation on the roads occurred in several areas without however causing any particular inconvenience to traffic.

Also in Tuscany, a series of waterspouts formed in the afternoon off the coast of Quercianella, south of Livorno. The phenomenon, at least three waterspouts that formed offshore between the Vada lighthouse and Quercianella, remained visible for a few minutes even from the ground and then disappeared among the mass of clouds.

Bad weather also in Emilia: the wave of bad weather affecting the Modena area this afternoon has caused damage and inconvenience especially in Palagano, on the Apennines, with the overflowing of ditches. Fabio Braglia, president of the Province of Modena and originally from Palagano, reports on his Facebook page how Palagano was hit this afternoon by “a water bomb, with major problems on two municipal streets”, namely “via Riolo via palazzo Pierotti “. Braglia also reports “several landslides from adjacent fields. The firefighters are intervening. Disturbances also occurred in Savoniero where several ditches and canals overflowed.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that an intense hailstorm hit the Foggia area a short while ago, in particular in the Borgo Incoronata area, about 10 kilometers from the capital and in the lower Tavoliere area, especially in the Ordona area. The hail covered the road surface along the stretch of state road 16 towards Cerignola, also causing a pile-up in which no injuries were reported. Borgo Mezzanone was also affected by the hailstorm, where numerous migrants live especially in makeshift shacks. The firefighters at work. There is damage to crops.
