Salvini: Mattarella? Today is Republic Day, not European sovereignty
(Marco Cremonesi) Double Northern League attack against President Mattarella. The first one comes from Claudio Borghi, Salvini senator, who above a photo showing the message from the head of state to the prefects on the occasion of June 2nd. Mattarella speaks of the European Union which «we have decided to give life to with the other free peoples of the continent and whose sovereignty we will consecrate, in a few days, with the election of the European Parliament». Borghi notes: June 2nd is Italian Republic Day. Today the sovereignty of our nation is consecrated. If the president really thinks that sovereignty belongs to the European Union rather than Italy, for consistency he should resign, because his role would no longer make sense.”
Then, the deputy prime minister himself intervenes Matteo Salvini, at In half an hour on Rai3: «Today is Republic Day, today is the day of the Italians, of the Republic, not of European sovereignty. We have a President of the Republic because there is the Republic, I think of Europe as sovereign states that come together, but national sovereignty is fundamental, beyond the tweets today we are celebrating the Italian Republic. I will never surrender to a European super state where those who have the money are in charge.”
The senator responds to both from Italia Viva Enrico Borghi: «That the League, on Republic Day, even goes so far as to ask for President Mattarella’s resignation, distorting the words he uttered, is an extremely serious fact that cannot go unnoticed. The frantic search for visibility of those in search of an almost desperate consensus cannot go so far as to involve the guarantor of our Constitution and our national unity.”
