«The candidates must say who finances them» Il Tirreno

LAWN. Two stones in the pond are stirring the waters of politics in the aftermath of the investigation into corruption which led to prison lieutenant colonel of the Carabinieri Sergio Turini and to house arrest the majority shareholder of the Colle Group Riccardo Matteini Bresci (as well as the private investigator Roberto Moretti).

The first stone was thrown by Jonathan Targetti, candidate for mayor in Prato with his Targettopoli civic list, who today, 2 June, launched an appeal to other political forces to carry out a transparency operation.

«The investigation launched in recent days – we read in a note from Targettopoli – has brought to light a middle world made up of possible unclear relationships between entrepreneurs, law enforcement agencies and local political parties. This requires honest and urgent reflection, especially in view of the local elections which will be held in a few days. Let us at Targettopoli begin, clearing the field of any type of uncertainty and publicly declaring that we have refused contributions from companies and entrepreneurs from the beginning, having preferred self-financing as a political method. A choice that guarantees us total autonomy, full freedom of maneuver and the precious exclusive respect of our ideas, our vision of the future and our electorate.”

Then Targetti takes up the words of the undersecretary Giorgio Silli (himself heard as a witness in the corruption investigation) who had ruled out links between the local centre-right and Matteini Bresci. And he launches an appeal: «We ask all candidates and political groups to disclose any economic contributions from companies, if they have legitimately received them. And to indicate before voting the name of any financier and the financial amount of the support. Ours is not intended to be a media pillory, a question of seriousness and clarity.”

«Ours wants to be a clear political gesture of maximum transparency towards the electorate and all of Prato – explains Targetti – While waiting for the judiciary to clarify, the investigators’ investigations however cast shadows that politics must try to avoid, avoiding possible speculations on what has been kept silent. For this reason, the time has come for all of Prato’s politics to make a gesture of profound sincerity and transparency. Certain dynamics cannot fail to be clarified by those who appear before voters with the ambition of governing our city.”

The other stone was thrown, with a much smaller dose of prudence, by Alessandro Moggi, president of Italia Viva Alta Valbisenzio, who in the morning in a post on Facebook had mentioned, among other things, that Riccardo Matteini Bresci is a financier of the Ilaria Bugetti’s electoral campaign, also talking about alleged favors done by the mayor of Cantagallo, Guglielmo Bongiorno, to Matteini Bresci himself. «Embarrassing and probably unfounded accusations» says Moggi himself, but which require a response from those directly involved.

A first response could soon arrive in the form of a paper stamped by Ilaria Bugetti, who announces a “hard line against any attempt to discredit her with allegations and falsehoods with defamatory content. We have seen a fair campaign so far. I would hope it would stay that way.” But she has not yet filed a complaint.

Another response comes to him from his own party through Veronica Versace Scopelliti, provincial president of Italia Viva, who, without ever naming him, «disassociates herself from the statements of Italia Viva Alta Valle Bisenzio, considering them inappropriate and contrary to any fair political discussion ». Scopelliti also asks for the administration of Italia Viva Valbisenzio.
