Caserta / Pedara – An 87-year-old pensioner, former railway employee originally from Caserta, attempted to kill his 78-year-old ex-wife by shooting him in the villa in Pedara, Sicily, where they lived in separate rooms, but the gun jammed; whereupon the man did not give up, and hit the woman in the head with the butt of the gun, but the ex-wife managed to disarm him. Disarmed of her, he decides to hit her with the stick he used to walk and then attempted to strangle her. The man was stopped by neighbors who, alerted by the woman’s screams of pain, intervened and took her away until the Carabinieri arrived and stopped the man. The couple’s daughters also live in the house, but they were not at home at the time of the attack. The episode occurred last Friday afternoon. The military seized the weapon used by the pensioner, found on the ground, a 7.65 caliber Berretta with the serial number obliterated. The victim was taken to hospital in Acireale for several injuries; she remained vigilant and reconstructed what happened to the Carabinieri. The 87-year-old was arrested for attempted murder and receiving a firearm and, after being questioned in the barracks, he was taken to a protected facility under house arrest awaiting validation from the investigating judge.
